Pros

In my seven years at Booz Allen Hamilton, I have worked on many projects for many clients. I am an Electrical Engineer supporting the Homeland Security / Law Enforcement group. I have supported the FBI, Navy, State Department, Capitol Police, US Marshals and the DEA. I have done task such as circuit design, PCB layout, CPLD and FPGA design, embedded software, systems engineering and project management. I have looked at other companies from time to time. They usually have a hard time matching the salary and the benefits that I receive at Booz Allen. For the compensation, other companies usually come in about 20k less that what I am making. For benefits, I get low medical, lots of PTO and 10% into my 401k, regardless if I put in anything or not.

Cons

I do not like the buzz words that I have to deal with at Booz Allen Hamilton. It seems that every couple of months there is something else that we are supposed to try to do. This month, I am supposed to try to get "plugged into" different groups within Booz Allen. I am supposed to try to connect to other people so that synergy may flow between groups. I do not like the move up or out mentality of Booz Allen. I believe that there is a place for technical, functional people in the workplace. I don't like having to dress to impress at Booz Allen HQ. I wear slacks and a tie to the client site where I work most of the time. If I have to go to HQ for some reason during the day, I feel very uncomfortable wearing this. Almost everyone at HQ wears the suit.

Pros

There is an enormous social network in the DC area because the company hires a lot of young people. Being in my mid 20s, I want to work somewhere that values me, pays me a nice salary, and has a lot of other young people. The Christmas party at the Air and Space museum and the day they rented out all of Kings Dominion were both insane. I appreciate that they go a little crazy for employee morale. Also, my manager has been incredibly receptive and supportive and encouraging. I'm not sure if I just got lucky, but she's awesome.

Cons

Their version of 401(k) matching sucks. It's incredibly generous if you're over 40 or can stay at the company for more than 7 years. I am neither of these things. Most people in their mid 20s will not be staying at any company let alone a consulting company for that long. People in my generation are estimated to have about 17 distinct full-time jobs by the time we retire. I understand a company wanting to encourage loyalty, but I won't see any money from their schedule until I've been an employee for 3 years, and i won't be fully vested for several more.
