A Flaming Nightmare

Pros

There was absolutely nothing good about my work experience at Braze. Maybe a few of the people in IC roles.

Cons

My entire experience at Braze was negative. From my very first day to trying to return my equipment post-resignation, it was a complete and utter mess. Disorganization, catty, high school mean girl/frat boy behavior, a really weird obsession with their wanna-be-messiah CEO... and abusive, cruel, angry management—it's honesly a miracle the company has been even remotely successful. The disgusting and dominant white, male bro-like culture and blatant disregard for anyone who doesn't fit that mould (mostly women) was a total deal-breaker for me. While I was there, I watched two people from management have a full-on screaming match over a small disagreement in front of room full of their employees, witnessed incredibly talented people who had the audacity to ask questions about the way the company was being run get fired, and more than once sat in shock as my "manager" took credit for work or an idea that was actually mine. I also watched a senior-level manager encourage a mid-level manager to bully a lovely, competant colleague of mine until they nearly had a mental breakdown and finally quit to protect themselves. I, myself, was forced to tears over the way I was treated several times at Braze—that has never happened at any other company I have ever worked for, ever. This is a horribe, soul-crushing place to work. It took me MONTHS to get myself back together again and shake off the trauma of my experience after quitting—the abuse, stress, and negativity were that bad.

Challenges for work life balance

Pros

Casual atmosphere Daily catered lunch, free snacks + drinks Great people, tons of talent Great product, very successful in the space Growing fast

Cons

Work-life balance is a problem across the organization. Pressure to complete assignments outside of normal working hours. Work from home options and flexible vacation time are subject to the whims of your department head. Velocity of projects and shifting focus can leave little room for confidence in quality of work delivered. Leadership is complicit in late additions, changing priorities, and ad hoc everything-is-urgent asks outside of established processes. Managers are frequently senior or high-performing individual contributors promoted into management roles with no reduction in their individual responsibilities and little training. This results in disengaged direct reports and high turnover. Location of NY office is pretty awful. Right by port authority and times square. Convenient location for transit hubs but really, really not great to walk through every day.

Pros

- Very talented and dedicated group of people - Transparent executive team - Catered lunches - Flexible time off - Tuition Reimbursement

Cons

- Lack of professional growth - Top down structure in the department - No sense of strategy behind the work that is produced - Under-qualified management - my current manager does very little but assign projects in Asana. How will this help me grow professionally? - A pattern of hiring "friends" and putting them in management level roles. Some management level employees aren't very knowledgeable about what we do as a company, but are hired because they were referred by another management level employee.
