Cadence has promise but fails to deliver

Pros

Cadence has many dedicated, technically expert employees. I would rank the competence level of most Cadence employees above those at peer companies. Customer-facing employees generally work very hard on behalf of their customers.

Cons

Cadence is no longer a fun place to work. Management has forgotten that happy customers buy more software than can be engineered through fancy accounting practices. Consequently, they have erected barriers which made it difficult for customers to contact Cadence while at the same time they removed tools used to solve customer issues. From a benefit standpoint, they often forced employees to take more vacation than they accrued and instituted inflexible company-wide shutdowns. Many, many jobs have been moved from the US to sites in India, China, and Russia.

Pros

The pay scale for technical writers was good in the U.S. compared to other similar companies. There was ample time available for personal emergencies.

Cons

The primary consideration for management in the technical writing arena is cost reduction, so U.S. based writers were summarily laid off and the jobs were reopened in India.

Pros

Compensation good, benefits good, interesting industry that's very complex, the industry (in contrast) is rather small so it's a pretty quick ramp up to understand it and the general business environment

Cons

Somewhat rudderless -- not sure where company growth is going to come from; and I don' t think anyone there does either. If Cadence ever did become significantly successful, don't know what would stop the much larger semi-conductor industry from buying them out and laying off every non-engineer. Support functions seem to be perenially at risk for layoffs. Poor innovation pipeline leads to a constant stream of acquisitions, destabilizing the culture and encouraging existing talented employees to leave. The only proven and consistent way to get promoted at Cadence is to leave and come back.
