Pros

A good brand to have on your resume. You'll get the chance to see how a Fortune 100 brand builds their marketing. Good pay and benefits. Work life balance is great.

Cons

Blatant sycophant behavior would take place in front of my manager and director during stand-ups. Team members who were on the more genuine side would be quite uncomfortable. Meanwhile, the leaders would either turn their head, or enable them if they felt it was coming from an Associate who was savvy politically or had rising popularity within the department. (What was advantageous for the career climb was more important than substance.) If you're mainly looking to apply yourself creatively or strategically you'll be disappointed. At times, I found that my manager (who was quite patronizing despite demonstrating limited ability) struggled to understand high-level brand concepts. It seemed like most of the department was designed not to build that unconventional 'What's in your Wallet' advertising you see in mass media (that's done by external ad agencies, btw)—but instead, are there simply to maintain the corporate brand's status quo. As a result, there's a lot of hive mind. And deviation from that poses the risk of coming off as threatening to management, who's mind is too far gone from the concept of any sort of individual imagination.

Pros

McLean has a nice campus.

Cons

Capital One’s workplace is a cut-throat environment where team members and colleagues take note of any weakness to exploit that weakness for their gain. Capital One management promotes intense competition, aggression, and a ruthless pursuit of success among their employees. Employees are focused solely on their personal goals and advancement at the expense of colleagues and team members which produces high levels of stress, fear and a lack of team collaboration. This lack of collaboration hinders creativity and innovation. Associates are afraid to share ideas or information out of fear that it could be used against them. On a team, team members are constantly vying against each other for promotions, recognition and opportunities which leads to a lack of teamwork and cooperation. Teamwork is undermined as individuals are more concerned about outperforming their colleagues than working together for common goals. There is very minimal trust between coworkers. The pressure to excel and the fear of being surpassed by others contribute to elevated stress levels. At Capital One job security is precarious and job performance is evaluated in a highly critical manner. The fear of job loss among associates intensifies the competitive atmosphere. Office politics, manipulation, and backstabbing are common at Capital One as associates seek to gain an edge over their peers. Colleagues engage in undermining each other to secure coveted positions. Associates at Capital One sacrifice their work-life balance in an attempt to stay ahead – working long hours and constantly focusing on career advancement.

Pros

- Great tech - Modern approach (everything was microservices, single CI-CD pipelines for teams, single libraries used by all teams, basically they implemented the DRY procedure aka "don't repeat yourself" for all their applications so everything was integrated across teams) - Great processes, as you had to meet with cybersecurity and architects whenever modifying APIs (they used swagger - Great push for using open-source software, i.e. you could & would be encouraged to write code on github (we used github enterprise) and improve any application if you could - They also pushed for developers to write code and patent it, though, it was difficult - Rich Fairbank is actually a great guy and very intelligent and knows alot about tech and is pushing to make C1 competitive and on the same level as FB, Google or Amazon

Cons

- My biggest gripe was that it was kind of a cult. They kind of force you to do these "happy hours" on Fridays on Zoom, and other various, kind of cringey "team-building" events. As I said , they are a great company, it just seemed you HAD to drink the "company kool-aid" or you would not be considered "one of them" and might be then forced out of the company. You also have to work a lot with the business analysts who write out the projects or "intents" that eventually turn into the Jira card with acceptance criteria, and some of thing can be very ignorant and even conspire against you if they don't like you. Again, there's a lot of little cliques and "clubs" within which was the biggest thing I did not like.
