Pros

If going to work and feeling valued is important to you, sales is a great place to be at this company. I believe the people truly care about their reports, and the flexibility (and trust) they offer employees is second to none. It's on par with the rest of the industry, and the bonus package is better than some other competitors. The products are best-in-class for the industry in most cases, and otherwise, are at least at par. Other perks include good benefits (parental leave, health/dental/vision), free company-holidays (7+ Wellness Days each year) and about a month of holidays/vacation time, and for outside sales you get a car.

Cons

Cengage is one of the best companies in the industry, and is also indicative of broader struggles the industry faces. It straddles the fence-line of traditional textbook publishing (which much of the market still wants), and technological transformation. The product developers are intelligent, hard-working, and collaborative, but the 2-3 year revision cycle for both print and digital make it hard for the company and industry to stay with the times. As a result, sales teams have many consultative conversations as they seek to change the minds of their customers, bit by bit, and help transform the industry to more tech-friendly. Cengage is a great company, and I'd recommend applying if you want to get into EdTech. Just know that professional growth can be slow, don't expect regular or substantive pay raises each year, and recognize that the company/industry only have so much money, and often must choose between investing in product innovations or paying their people. Usually, you don't get both.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am happy to hear that you feel valued and enjoy the flexibility of your role. It’s great that you are satisfied with the many benefits we provide, including our company-wide wellness days. The education industry is one of constant change and I am proud that as an organization we have been able to adapt and keep up with the changing needs of today’s learners and remain a market leader. Cengage Group has undergone a significant amount of change, we started as a traditional publishing company that is now over 70% digital. I encourage you to embrace change, as it is part of our strategic vision to lead transformation and evolve our strategy based on changing needs of learners. Regarding opportunities for advancement, this is an area that we have invested in significantly over the past several years. I encourage you to have a conversation with your manager about the learning and development resources that are available that may help you advance your skillset and take the next step in your career. Best, Michael Hansen, CEO

Pros

The company has a strong mission and offers good work-life balance, including additional wellness days outside of PTO. I appreciated the weekly broadcasts with the CEO, which helped to keep everyone informed and aligned.

Cons

I found that the company culture was only as good as the worst leadership. Some teams were led with integrity, transparency, and trust, while others were led through cringy forced icebreaker games and called it team-building to hide their hidden agendas and deceit. Additionally, my role at the company was created as a knee-jerk reaction to Covid layoffs, and I was among the first to be eliminated when hiring slowed down. But I’m sure the money they are saving from my salary will help fund their all-hr in person team meeting this spring. The leadership at the director level was not always ethical or trustworthy. They talk a big game about growth opportunities/employee development that is mostly lip service and don’t create actual action plans to help create at path.
