Pros

Depending on the franchise you might get some decent benefits. Our franchise provided free meals, PTO after a year, advancement opportunities for good workers, and reasonable insurance. Sometimes the work environment was actually nice.

Cons

The downsides come when inevitably you're understaffed, paired with co-workers who don't care at all, and/or you get the hand of upper management mucking up things. It almost seemed like any time something was improving, somebody would come in to "make it better" and end up making it worse. Customers could be absolutely nasty and horrible. Cussing you out and calling you awful things. There were never repercussions for these customers; they were regulars and had money. Luckily overall the customers were reasonable but the few horrible ones stand out. When you have understaffed days and you're still the one who went to work and decided to put your best in, you're still the one on the chopping block when things don't turn out well. The better you are and the more effort you put in, the more likely it is you're going to be guilt-tripped and looked down on if you call out sick.

Pros

Wonderful, wonderful customers. If you do your job well they’ll come back every day. You meet so many people from around town that you never would have noticed before. So many customers were on a first name basis with us, because of how often we say each other and talked for a few minutes each day. Definitely a rewarding job.

Cons

The General Managers don’t stick around. Every few months theres a new manager, new policies, new everything. You’ll have to re-learn where every little thing is kept, so good luck finding sugar packets or spoons every time. Promotions are based on favoritism, as are write-ups. Of course some are well deserved but most of the time it’s due to time spent outside of work. They also expect you to work off the clock, even when someone points it out, it’s encouraged by GMs, AGMs, and some shift leaders. Tips used to be split amongst who was on the floor, so all present crew members and shift leaders. We used to go home with $5-$7 a day, split each time a shift leader passed the shift on to the next leader, and it was fair. Now expect to have your hard earned tips to split amongst everyone, even if they’re higher up the ladder. Management won’t back you up. They’ll take gossip as truth and feed into it. Even if you have reason to feel unsafe around someone, you’ll still be scheduled with them. No attempt at transferring stores, or even work different shifts. Sensitive information is left out constantly, like harassment reports, who will get fired next week, and so on.

Pros

- Appreciation of retail workers and tipping! - Free food while working and half off when not - Awesome place to grow if you have a great manager that respects you - Super fun, be kind to coworkers and you'll go far! - Health insurance was pretty good

Cons

- beware of the red flag managers: Gossip, don't give you days off, yell at you, tell you the job is more important than your education (IT'S NOT BTW). If you see your manager is displaying these things, RUN. Can cause burnout much quicker and hate your job. - Low pay (some places don't let you take tips)
