Pros

Flexibility in schedule. Co workers, some of them. Atmosphere, sometimes. EFTI (free learning), depending on Proctor, invaluable.

Cons

This is a real post from someone who has ten years experience at Equinox - all of it a waste. Their policies? A JOKE. Their motto? A JOKE. Their rules (depending on who it’s for and where it’s coming from), A JOKE. THEIR MOTTO, WHERE FITNESS IS LIFE? THE BIGGEST JOKE OF ALL. To be an employee at Equinox is to play Survivor without the tv cameras mixed in with Kindergarten, if you can imagine that. The trainers there run the gammet from highly qualified to stupidly unprofessional, and let’s not even mention the revolving door which is called employment at this company. They let good people go and they let bad people stay. If you are obnoxious, ugly, fat, gay or don’t know your forehead from your heal in terms of training, by all means, look for employment here. If you’re qualified, have a love for helping people, are educated in anatomy and physiology, and have a feel for program design that is progressive and can actually get your clients results, your tenure here will not last more than 6 months unless you’re a deviant, deranged or retarded, WHICH I AM. However, that doesn’t mean this isn’t a real post.

Pros

If you've recently been Certified or graduated from college with an exercise science/kines/etc. degree, then Equinox is GREAT starting place. (If you're 27 years or older DO NOT apply here to be a trainer. Recruiters seek very young/new professionals with little to no previous gym experience) You learn phenomenal business and training skills that you will use for the rest of your professional career. The continuing education that's provided will maximize your potential tremendously. Working at Equinox is the definition of corporate America. Other staff members and club members are lovely people to be around. Beautiful gym and free membership, again amazing place to start and learn the ropes of Personal Training. Very thankful for how much I learned. Since it's an expensive gym, that commission is nice if you sell your first few clients on training packages.

Cons

1. severe, intolerable, and degrading MICROMANAGEMENT. MICROMANAGED. MICROMANAGED!!!!!!!!!! Managers will treat you like you're incompetent and want to control your every. single. move. They're like robots. No flexibility or freedom to train how you'd like or do what you want. 2. Managers will quote, multiple times on a weekly basis, "Equinox is always your #1 priority." Yet you won't make ANY money and they want you to practically be on call for VERY low pay. You're not salaried and you will not have clients until the first 4-5 months of working there. Get ready to work floorshifts 6 to 7 days a week. 3. Equinox gyms have an average of 26-29 trainers. Good luck getting clients and competing with 28 other people who have been there years and months longer than you. Leads go to favoritism and superiority. 4. It's a sales job. If you can't sell yourself or don't attain strong communication skills, this is not the place for you. 5. The management is sexist. If you're a female and your manager is also a female, I'll be praying for you. 6. Management will monitor what's least important and focus on the wrong priorities. 7. They will try to steal you. Do not let Equinox take advantage of you or your time. Make sure you're always being paid when having to be there.
