Pros

There has been change in management (note that Rupert Scofield is no longer a CEO) and generally in where the company is going, and that's a positive change. People are great and pleasure to work with. Good work-life balance overall (some depts more so than the others).

Cons

As a former non-profit, don't expect high compensation.

- Making an impact - empowering low income people around the world to take control of their financial future. Every challenge we resolve in our daily work contributes to the resolution of the challenges that many people face around the world. Our employees feel grateful and proud to make an impact on our mission to alleviate poverty through lasting solutions that help people build assets, create jobs and raise their standard of living. - Great benefits: medical and dental fully covered for the employees, 401k, discounted gym, pre-tax spending accounts (health care, dependent care, transportation benefits), tuition reimbursement program, 8 paid holidays, 3 floating holidays, generous paid leave based on length of service - Diverse Team & Global Reach with subsidiaries in Africa, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East and South Asia, employing 10,000+ people, FINCA's geographic reach is among the widest of the leading microfinance networks. - Profession Development opportunities - our international network of 21 subsidiaries on five continents offers an abundance of career options that span a wide array of disciplines, with endless opportunities to learn and grow. - Being at the forefront of a changing industry: FINCA uses innovative methods to expand access to financial services: mobile banking, agency banking, biometrics. An innovator in solving global poverty

Pros

FINCA has a noble mission to reduce poverty through microfinance and at the same time is creating social enterprises for the financially excluded. (The co-founder literally wrote the book on social entrepreneurship.) It has a top reputation for its microfinance work and the ED is leading FINCA into new programs to connect the poor to things like solar lamps and clean water. They are also involved in biometric banking, geodata and other tech to get services to the most remote communities. I was surprised by how driven most staff are given that it started as a small non-profit. People work extremely hard at FINCA, and days can be intense and long. Project deadlines can sometimes cut into personal life but leadership is respectful about it. The culture is friendly and sociable and it feels good to work with people who have a shared mission. At the same time, there is a strong focus on innovation and improvement, so performance expectations are high and change is basically a given. That kind of environment isn’t for everyone. Having FINCA on your resume is a point of pride and former FINCA staff get hired by the top NGOs. Interactions and friendships with staff in FINCA offices around the world are the norm. Benefits are good.

Cons

This is more advice than con for current and potential staff: if you don’t like a fast pace or being creative, this isn’t the place for you. FINCA is all about trying new approaches to solve poverty and trying new things is exciting but can be challenging. Be ready to learn and grow.
