Pros

They have an impressive portfolio of tech brands. Whoop whoop!

Cons

The constant acquisition of new brands breeds a culture of fear among the rank and file as it generates an endless cycle of redundancies due to the"strip it down and rebuild" mantra. Everyone who you speak to in your first few days tells you "they get rid of people really quickly and quietly". The fact that the CEO appointed her own brother, with no experience of the media sales industry as the CRO should ring alarm bells about nepotism. Advice fed back up the line is either not passed on or ignored. Levels of staff churn are like nothing I've ever seen.

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry to hear that you feared acquisitions, as growth, both organically and via acquisition, is an ambition of the Future business. We aim to integrate acquired businesses into the Future model as seamlessly as possible with minimal disruption. In some instances it is necessary to review structure and adjust accordingly, however this is conducted inline with local legislation and best practice. In 2018, Future made three acquisitions, which have been successfully integrated into the company. One of our values is that we are proud of our past and excited about our future, and we believe we live this every day. 2018 was Future’s most successful year to date. This would not have been possible without the employees who joined Future as new hires or those we were delighted to acquire during our journey. Together we are one Future. We are dedicated to attracting and retaining talented individuals. Employees are appointed to role on merit, so we are deeply disappointed that you feel appointment decisions are based on anything but this. We are committed to upholding transparency and always keep the company updated about any organisational changes. We encourage you to reach out to People & Culture at peopleandculture@futurenet.com with any concerns you have.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am sorry that you were only with us for a month, we want all our new joiners to have a positive experience. Can I encourage you to reach out to Joan McGarian, Head of People Operations to share you specific concerns so we can work to ensure no-one else has a similar experience. We are also currently developing a new and exciting onboarding experience for all new starters to ensure that they are given the correct level of support and direction in their new role with the business. Best of luck moving forward.

Pros

Fairly relaxed and collaborative working space, with no strict hours policy, and no barriers to working with people throughout the business. Good opportunities to gain exposure very quickly to most facets of the company, which is less likely in other media houses.

Cons

The culture of fear. It becomes achingly obvious, very quickly, just how brutal the view of staff in Future is. Within weeks, if that, you'll notice the first people that are suddenly not there anymore. Then more will be gone. It's a pure asset/liability tightrope at Future, as far as staff are concerned and, as the business continues to actively move away from focusing on content (whatever hooey they spin to the contrary), and instead focusing on affiliate sales, anyone not pushing or contributing to that agenda have their days numbered. The management team are petrified of Zillah too. No-one dare make a stand, or even dissent, so everything is essentially micro-managed, and teams are doing work that EVERYONE knows is wrong-headed, but are doing it anyway 'because the boss says'. It's not sane to try and develop a career in such an arbitrary business, so avoid, which is a shame to say, as there are a lot of good people still here. But, they'll get made redundant and replaced with graduates by the end of the year too.

As former employee we are sorry to hear you felt this way while working at Future. We always encourage our employees to give feedback to their People Partner or discuss with their line manager because it is the people in the boat that matter and the employees are our first priority. It is true that we are a commercial business and so all of our ventures need to have feasible and valid returns on investment so that we can remain profitable and competitive in the market. However, Magazines still contribute to a huge chunk of our revenues and we are incredibly proud of the content within. We value all our teams and we try to be as transparent as we can. We have lean teams with a lot of expertise within their field. Within our competitive market we are proud of their flexibility and dedication because those are the things that are needed.
