Pros

It is a big company with several locations across South and North America. It has also been in business for over 100 years.

Cons

The Procurement office in Whitby is by far the worse work environment I have ever seen in my career. The Department is ran as if it was a (bad) High School, including having cubicles inspected every morning to look if people are on time (7:30am!!!) or have left to grab a cup of coffee. If management is around people are afraid to interact or talk to each other...this translates to inexistent teamwork and very bad work morale. There is hardly ever a compliment for work well done, in fact there is only pressure for savings and more savings and a "slap in the hand" if you don't reach your goals. There is no guidence or support. You are basically on your own. There is no interaction beetween the other regional teams to share experiences. Upper management in Tampa is absent and does not spend time with the team when visiting. Furthermore, there is no formal training or financial assistance so employees can develop their skills. On top of all these issues, the company has been cutting benefits and had two layoff waves and location shutdowns in less than two years.

Pros

They do offer full benefits. Average insurance, 401k (%6) match.

Cons

What were once careers to grow and build are now all dead end jobs (unless you're Brazillian). The company demands %100 compliance and intimidates differing opinions. They demand %100 loyalty and dedication from their employees but will not hesitate to lay off employees at this first hint of a hit to earnings. The right hand never knows what the left hand is doing. The level of shrewd greed straight of of Brazil is astonishing. If you follow the steel market and stocks, there is a reason that Gerdau is consistently down while its competitors are up. Gross incompetence at the top levels of business strategy. Safety is preached and preached and for the safety personnel they really do try. They are quick to make sure that personnel have full access to PPE and safe job practices. All the while, management will literally let the building fall down around employees because it would cost production time and money to fix it right. Its truely a wonder that someone hasnt been killed due to poor conditions in the last few years. There are many, mindless, counter productive initiatives that hemmorage both time and money that yield meaningless results. Completely demoralized.

Pros

There are no "pros" to working for this company. None whatsoever.

Cons

Mental Bondage, Soul Sucking Policies and Methodologies, Management Second-Guessing Themselves on Every Single Issue at the Worker's Physical and Psychological Expense - In An Effort to Keep Their Soulless Taskmaster Jobs, Culture of Fear that Permeates All Facets of the Job, HYPOCRISY OF COMPANY RULES VS. Upper Management Behavior and Adherence to Their Own Rules, Proclaiming Success when Replicating an Industry Standard Set 4 decades prior, Strict Adherence to the Script to fix problems - No matter the waste of time, money, physical labor, mental anguish, dehydration, IV's of fluids in men's arms while asking what's middle management walks up and asks, "What's taking so long?"
