Pros

They train you in their hair cutting system, which is great, and get you lots of client experience. The base pay isn't terrible, and I typically make pretty decent tips. Also, even if business is slow, you at least make your base hourly pay, which is fantastic.

Cons

I've worked for 5 different franchises, and as time has passed, I've seen the entire company treat stylists more and more like robots instead of humans. You aren't allowed to get ill, and if something happens and you HAVE to miss work, regardless of the circumstances, people will treat you badly because of it, even if it's on a doctor's orders. (At least, this is my experience.)

Because each salon is independently owned and operated, the franchisee would be the best person to address your feedback. If you would like to share more, please email customerservice@greatclips.com and we will forward it to your franchisee. Thank you.

Cons

Working every weekend Working Sundays Working holidays Only 3 request off days A YEAR Working 8+ days in a row Working multiple 9 hours days in row Traveling to different stores and low mileage pay No life outside of work Working late (most stores don’t close until 9PM!!) Having to cut 20+ haircuts in a day without a break(or a chance to sit down and rest your feet) Dress code says no athletic shoes(unless they are “polish-able”) Lunch breaks are only 30 minutes long (unpaid) Most of the time having to do all the cleaning because no one else will.

Pros

Yes, with tips, the money can be good. I have had to resort to this work a couple of times due to recession in 2009 and Covid in 2020. With the right manager and franchise owner, it can be tolerable ... even at times kind of fun.

Cons

The most recent location I worked at was miserable most days. Team members walked out right and left. They would leave their key and disappear. This left the remaining stylists with long hours that the franchise owner demanded us to cover. I am older but strong and capable. It almost broke my back to do a 7 hour shift and work as fast as I could, sometimes with a 15 minute break. I am a creative person and hair designer who needed a ready made client base so I put up with it as long as I could. Customers are often rude or noncommunicative, sometime with no tips. During 6.99 sales, you work like a dog and feel like one too. Start your hair industry career somewhere else.
