Avoid Groupon at All Costs: Horrific Work Experience

Pros

I see very few pros working there...

Cons

Working at Groupon turned out to be the worst experience in my career. This company's primary focus is on cutting costs, aiming to pay employees as little as possible while expecting them to generate maximum revenue. They are currently undergoing a significant restructuring phase, resulting in a substantial number of layoffs. As an employee, you feel undervalued, merely a means to boost their profits, then, they'll terminate your employment without any compassion. HR lacks empathy and fails to support the well-being of employees. The training and process systems in place are incredibly overwhelming, with the use of Google Sheets, which proves to be inefficient and time-consuming. Furthermore, the company culture does not foster a welcoming atmosphere; existing employees tend to keep to themselves rather than assisting newcomers. In conclusion, I strongly advise against applying or working for this company.

Not what it used to be

Pros

- people - cross-functional experiences - always learning something new as new tools and products change/develop - work/life balance, remote work

Cons

- frequent layoffs in the last 5 years, and especially the last year, have led to much fewer employees doing the work of everyone that was let go or quit, resulting in constant scrambling to find who does what - company touts a "performance culture", but laid off numerous tenured, high performers which loses credibility of senior leadership - most promotions and leadership are now in INTL, losing hope for US employees - tools and products do not evolve with changing tech landscape

Pros

Flexible time off policy (Sometimes).

Cons

There aren't enough words that I can put here that will show how serious I am about the failings of Groupon Getaways. If you are thinking of applying, I am begging you to reconsider. There are other sales jobs in Chicago that will make you much happier. Firstly, we have had 9 people leave the floor in the last two months, including top leadership. Look at the public earnings reports and you can clearly correlate the two. People are no longer making anywhere what they used to, and the response from the team is to pivot the division to make us like an OTA (Online Travel Agent). We now have thousands of deals up on the site at once, with customer growth slowing (Another data point that can be found in the earnings reports). You can clearly understand why that doesnt make sense with a basic understanding of Supply/Demand economics. As a result, Commission payouts have slowed greatly, and your base is all you can rely on being paid out to you. The division has prioritized the needs of the business before its employees, and it shows. Actionable feedback from us hasn't been valued, and the steady decline of this division is now in a freefall. It's sad to see it. I've been on the floor for years. This place used to be a great way to grow and learn from. The decisions of leadership have ruined whatever promise we had left. Do not apply to Groupon Getaways.
