Pros

No worse than any other retail operation I've worked for. Free coffee/soda while you work. Bonus check in December. 1 free car wash a month for stores that have car washes. 1 free piece of fruit per shift.

Cons

IF you meet their strict, and apparently arbitrary, hiring standards you'll go through a grueling 16 hours of Computer Based Training (CBT), most of that, if it was relevant at all, you'll forget and re-learn on the job. When I started in my store I constantly heard "You we're told what? We don't do it that way in my store." You can expect to be continually re-trained in ways that contradict your previous training. In theory the company is micromanaged to the point of insanity; there's rules, document's, and CBT's for everything. In practice each store cuts whatever corners they can to get the job done until senior management shows up. KwikTrip was woefully unprepared for the acquisition and conversion of the 30+ PDQ stores. In store training is inconsistent. The stores are understaffed (largely do to the hiring policies and un-competitive pay for the Madison market). Communication, on the rare occasions it happens, between the different levels of store management and shifts is extremely poor. On many shifts there isn't anyone in charge and the employees have to work it out for themselves (you can guess how well that goes), Stress rolls downhill. Store manager's take out their stress on the staff. There's a huge amount of in store work to be done (stocking, cleaning, cooking, etc) and a high volume of customers. We're continually being chewed out for not getting enough done with out being shown how when the staff consists mostly of poorly trained and under motivated new hires; plus temporary floaters from stores outside of the Madison area where customer volume and customer demographics are different. A lot of employees are holding on until we get the balance of our hiring bonus (6 month mark) before looking elsewhere. On a side note, KwikTrip views itself as being "Family Friendly" and thus won't stock condoms. However the do carry tobacco products, beer, hard liquor, and the lottery. SO being sexually responsible is bad but addiction is good. Or maybe, like so many other things in the company, there's a profit motive behind the warm fuzzy veneer.

Pros

Fast-paced High pay Potential to move up. Awesome CEO, truly cares. Profit-sharing is really nice. 90 day review, get a pay raise.

Cons

It sucks having to suggestive sell people stuff they don't want. They have secret shoppers that will come and secretly monitor if you are following the 5-point policy of 1. Greeting 2. Ask for fuel 3. Suggestive sell 4. Thank you 5. Return comment. If you miss one of these, especially the suggestive sell, it results in a penalty against you which can lead to termination if it happens 3 times. 3 times. That's it. A little ridiculous. People always get mad about us suggestive selling but you don't have a choice. you must say it. There is a lot expected of you too. Lots of responsibilities that must be completed each shift and you can get in trouble if all of the duties are not finished in time. It's very stressful when you have to be running the register while getting chores done. Often under-staffed which makes getting things accomplished very difficult. Long-term people are not penalized very hard, get away with a lot of unacceptable work behavior without getting written up. Only get 2 ten minute breaks per 8 hour shift, no lunches. Don't know how that's legal. You're monitored so heavily with video cameras everywhere and even a microphone behind the register, feels like Big Brother is always watching.

Pros

The company says it shares 40% of profits with employees. Start and end times are defined and usually very accurate. Nice coworkers who try to do the best under the heavy circumstances.

Cons

While the company boasts of sharing 40% of profits with employees, it is really based on your employment status and number of hours you have worked throughout the year. The hourly wage is low (and could explain why they share some profits - though a lot less than if the employee was paid more per hour). For each store making in excess of $25,000 daily (times over 400 stores - you do the math), paying $10.20-$10.50 an hour is a slap in the face to the employee. Some employees even have advanced college degrees and know more about customer service and business operations than the actual "Store Leader", which is what they call the Store Manager. Additionally, you only get one 20 minute break (for lunch) for working an 8 hour day - no additional breaks!!! This may be a violation of law and public policy, but no one challenges it so the company keeps doing it. There is also a lot of complaining by some shift leaders and daily changes of "how things are done" which causes a lot of frustration. Many employees leave the company; they go thorough a lot of employees - how great can a place be if turnover is high??!! Store management and company representatives will always side with the customer even if the customer threatens you or uses profanity towards you. There is no support from store management or home office to prevent a hostile work environment and keep it safe from the abuse of coworkers or customers. The company always makes you "push" the customer for physical and e-coupons but will always take expired coupons for gas and merchandise. Most stores are so busy that there is a shortage of help (employees leaving the company adds to this). Store management are often condescending and non-supportive towards worker happiness.
