Working at Mace

Pros

Mace is one of the leading construction firms in London with a certain amount of operations in UK regions and some international locations. You get to work on some of London's and UK's iconic projects and programs. A great addition to anyone's CV.

Cons

Both a pro and a con for this business is that it is run by the people who own it. On the up side, decisions can be made quickly, on the down side there may be little transparency in senior management decision making and unclear accountability for these decisions.

Pros

Dress down days on Fridays and before bank holidays, especially Christmas In-house and external training offered to staff - if it's in your contract's budget

Cons

Tupe'ed over from previous employer to Macro, Mace's Facilities Management division - during the process there was a complete lack of communication from Mace about the process once the initial consultations were complete No opportunities for those of us who tupe'ed over to progress or move on in the company. We seemed to be marooned in our own bubble and ignored by Head Office The management structure on the contract I was working at was ridiculously top heavy - there were about a dozen managers at various levels, and fewer than ten ground level employees doing the actual work Managers working at cross purposes, definitely not pulling together Lack of consultation with subject matter experts, meaning changes (not for the better) were made without any input from people doing the actual jobs Relying on too few people to do too much work, leading to frustration, stress and burnout amongst staff Lack of support and help for lower level employees HR uncommunicative and unhelpful Terrible communication within the company generally Company often says one thing and does something else completely, for instance in the area of workplace safety
