Pros

- Used to have a positive culture - Used to have a lot of technically strong people. A lot of them have left or are on their way out though. - Modern tech stack with microservices and CI/ CD

Cons

Company is changing from "people first" to "let's just build things, stop complaining". I almost wish CEO would just do a Basecamp/ Coinbase memo to make this shift really clear so people know what they're getting themselves into, and we can drop the facade of being a friendly and welcoming place. Please don't trust the recent alarmingly positive reviews and think for yourself. I have a feeling they're posted by HR or recruiting. Ask yourself, and ask the people you interview with - when was Medium's last fundraising? What's Medium's runway? How is Medium funded since its last fundraising forever ago? How does Medium plan to become profitable? What kind of leadership does Medium have to take it to the next level besides the CEO? How does Medium decide on what to bet on, and how does Medium set goals? What's the average tenure for product and design people? If after hearing the answers you still think this is a good place for you, then go for it! I just want people to have the right expectations going in. I've come to believe that a financially unhealthy company cannot have a healthy culture, since at the end of the day we're trying to run a business. Also, if you're a designer or PM, please just save yourself some time and go to some other company. Ask your interviewer: what's the average tenure of a designer or PM? How many designers/ PMs have left the company this past year? Medium churns through them and don't give them any autonomy.

Pros

- CEO is incredibly bought into the future of the company. Super accessible and is active in meetings (company). - Transparency is super high! I've experienced a lot of transparency throughout the interview process and as I was being onboarded. - Mission driven and super focused on pushing forward consciously. It's clear that the company has been through it the last year and change. Those that remained post VSP are super motivated to build an amazing product for users and improve culture. - I personally feel there's a lot of diversity in MGMT and across the company. There are tons of women in leadership positions (i.e. VP of eng, VP of Marketing, VP of product, Head of recruiting and the list goes on). I look around and also see a lot of URPs represented. As a URP myself, it's super nice to see! - Smaller company, a lot of autonomy and space to be creative! - great health, wellness plans and other benefits.

Cons

- Internal slack was taken over for a bit by employees who aired they were offered performance plans. It was uncomfortable but the People team stepped in to reiterate appropriate escalation paths for some of the information aired publicly. Seems to have turned a corner for the positive.

Solid place to grow & have high impact

Pros

Medium is a great place to work if you're looking to grow, have high impact, and are open to adapt when circumstances change. From my point of view, you should work here if: - You like helping your colleagues, whether they're on your team or in a completely different corner of the company. - You don't box yourself into a particular approach, project, or technology choosing to instead focus on the larger goal. - You're willing to take on work that requires you to grow and aren't too bummed or judgmental about inevitable mistakes, whether made by your or other people. Also: - Medium doesn't have ads. The subscription business model puts our writers and readers first and makes a lot of ethical decisions very straightforward. - Salaries are based on the SF Bay Area market no matter where you live. - Additional compensation in way to stock options, educational reimbursements, and other Silicon Valley perks. - People *are* very kind & nice. - Lots of people who've been at the company for 6+ years. Medium is not a place for you if you like to berate your colleagues or so attached to your particular view of the world that everyone who disagrees with you must be evil. Finally, if you're looking to coast in your job, Medium is simply too small of a company for that.

Cons

There has definitely been a good amount of turmoil recently, you can read all about it online. For one reason or another, some folks have always had strong opinions about Medium so it's not always fun reading another hot-take on Twitter. On the other hand, if you want to work at a universally beloved company good luck finding one.
