Depressing

Pros

Some really hard working individuals who really care about the future of education. Some solid innovation finally being attempted.

Cons

Everyone blames everyone for flailing performance. Zero corporate culture other than work long hours with no appreciation. I guess that’s a culture. Every lunch you can overhear conversation with either complaints or discussions of different opportunities in other organizations. Literally just hired half the company from a competitor that was also struggling. Not a lot of happy faces. Top heavy management. Nobody to do the work.

Employee morale at all-time low

Pros

People are nice and have a passion for education and the industry. Benefits are good although they have slowly been reduced as a result of new leadership and management.

Cons

Employees are not treated well by senior leadership and there is an expectation that extra hours should be put in to complete projects. Constant lay-offs mean people are doing 2-3 people's jobs. These change make employees nervous and uncertain about the future. Long-time employees who are experts in the industry are voluntarily leaving due to lack of trust in leadership. There are rumours that the CEO ultimately will sell Nelson once he brings it out of debt. Despite financial challenges, the company continues to invest dollars in questionable areas (ie. purchased an apparel company, acquired McGraw in Canada, new branding, sponsorships). Many employees are left wondering what the vision is.

Poorly Managed

Pros

Great benefits, dynamic atmosphere, interesting work

Cons

The industry is shifting and Nelson is struggling to find its place - a lot of pressure is being put on regular employees while the management doesn't know which way is up. C-suite and senior management is being poached from other publishers who are in-turn bringing over team members from their previous companies, creating a lack of cohesion, fear, and disruption.
