Good people, difficult path forward

Pros

Collaborate with smart and dedicated individuals who are passionate about turning out high-quality work. Employees are proud to be making a positive impact. Good health benefits and 401k matching. Pretty positive work-life balance and common-sense schedule flexibility.

Cons

Little to no growth opportunities for the majority of employees. The review process has improved, but employees do not have a view of career next steps outside the current year. Well-meaning exec team, but while big-picture goals are important, they need to be more supportive of the managers and lower-level employees. High turnover rates and burnout are seen for this reason. The expectations of what can be accomplished and how the company can scale are unrealistic for the size of the current (hardworking) workforce.

Make or break time

Pros

Great mission Very smart, dedicated & interesting colleagues Dynamic environment Regular WiFris and fun events

Cons

Some departmental divides--egos can sometimes get in the way. Some management issues Changing CEOs (currently an interim in post, will be interesting to see who/what happens next) ... this is turnaround time for the org. Board of Director involvement can destabilise when direction of the organisation flip-flops as a result of the latest edict. This creates a reactionary environment and frequent 'crisis-mode' status that is not constructive. Direction/Strategic crunch time - can't decide whether to be an under-resourced IT company that puts out sub-par products that the org struggles to maintain (also for which added value and/or revenue is unclear), or a publisher that puts out quality journals.
