An excellent mission driven organisation

Pros

I've worked at PLOS since 2009 and am familiar with both the UK and US offices. I've worked at another science publisher in an editorial position and in science administration for another company and I can truly say PLOS is an excellent place to work. I often say I came for the mission and stayed for the people. The best things about working at PLOS are: -Mission driven, with an inspiring mission to improve scholarly communication and make science open for all, which is upheld and respected by all -Interesting work across different roles (I've worked in a few) -Friendly and supportive co-workers who care about each other -Empowered staff -Big company benefits with a small company feel -Free wine and beer social every Friday, with good uptake, so you can get to know your colleagues with beer and snacks -Supportive and very friendly office administration staff who ensure your work needs are met and you are comfortable in your work environment -Great office locations for easy commutes- central Cambridge and SF! Near the river and Jesus Green in Cambridge and the Embarcadero in SF, so nice parks and water outside both offices for enjoyable lunch breaks -Monthly all staff meetings ensure regular communication from the executive team to the entire staff

Cons

None, but I have to write something in this box so you can't bring your pet to work which might be a con for some people

Glad I Moved On

Pros

There are a lot of well-intentioned, dedicated people here who really believe in the open access mission.

Cons

Projects are mismanaged with deadlines constantly changing. Innovation is always being talked about with no real results. The separation of editorial on the second floor and everyone else (Finance, Product, IT, Devs etc) on the first floor creates a toxic environment of jealousy and misunderstanding.

Be Wary

Pros

PLOS has a good mission. The people who end up working there are young and believe in what they're doing. Management nominally wants to leverage this.

Cons

I left PLOS because it was not a good place to grow. There was a highly bureaucratic system for determing company wide policy that often left employees clueless and poorly motivated. Add to that a cliquish work environment that verges on toxic, and you have good reason to leave while you still can. PLOS likes to hire outside contractors to do work, but this this often leads to abandonded and poorly understood technology/workflows.
