once great mission, poor work culture

Pros

Great mission and many good people who are trying to help the organization return to its glory days (or get back on track). Salaries are fair at least for managers in a large nonprofit. Good benefits include solid health and 401K programs. A useful place for entry level people or transitioning workers to get solid experience and launch or relaunch their careers.

Cons

A divisive fearful culture where the right things are said about mission, teamwork and valuing employees, but where the divisiveness and lack of honest communication and follow through by management make for many dashed initiatives and unhappy employees. Cross functional teams are in name only; resources both people and projects are wasted; hardest working groups, especially editorial teams, are not given enough time or salary to do their jobs, and so quality and output is slipping. Too many good people have left or are in the process and everyone, more or less, knows it.

Need to get out of here.

Pros

It's a great place with a lot of great people. But the longer I stay here the more I realize that it will never be a good place to work. The problemis just keep happening over and over and over again. Too many leadership changes. Not enough people interested in solving the hard problems. Nobody interested in thinking about the cultural issues that cause so much turnover.

Cons

I really wish that the mission was enough to keep people acting as professionals. But the reality is that too many people without the mission as their first priority have gained leadership positions, including the CEO. That doesn't mean they're bad people, it just means that they are not here for the reasons that some of us are. This causes a lot of conflict.

No better, no worse

Pros

The people - for the most part dedicated, professional and smart. Decent benefits package and they do try hard to do special things for people like a weekly social event with refreshments and snacks, celebrations for special events and a summer and Christmas party.

Cons

Large projects are started and then abandoned resulting in lost time, resources and money. The place has been in constant change for years. Some upper-management needs to be replaced. Limited career mobility in most jobs.
