Pros

I moved cross country a year and a half ago to start a new adventure with the PlayQ team, and I’m so happy I did! Every day I am continuously in awe of the work we are doing. Our company was built under the constant speculation of how the gaming industry developed over the years and what we can do as a business to challenge the status quo. I haven’t encountered many companies with this much foresight and I genuinely believe in the work we are doing. In combination with company vision, I find my own role within the organization to be truly rewarding. On my first day, I remember both founders sat me down to welcome me to PlayQ and told me I was a “business owner” of my function. I never felt so much responsibility in a role before and I was up for the challenge. Throughout my time here, I’ve continued to receive the freedom to carve my own path and the necessary support and resources along the way to be successful. All things considered, one really important factor for me is the people I work with. We are all passionate about the work we are doing and support each other no matter what our role is. The team here is comprised of experts from all parts of the world and from a variety of different industries. In addition to being talented in their field, I honestly just enjoy spending time with everyone! Every person is incredibly friendly and brings something unique to the table which makes for a really fun environment to work in.

Cons

An area for improvement would be to continue to provide more opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration outside of our daily work. Whether that’s continuing our volunteer work or developing interest groups, it would be fun to find more ways to collaborate.

Pros

Opportunity - For me this is top of the list. It’s the reason I joined the team in the first place. During my interview process, I really got an understanding that while PlayQ has accomplished a lot already, it’s really just on the cusp of its next big phase. Because the team is still relatively small, each of us has a huge opportunity to guide and shape what that new phase looks like. And not only what it looks like for the company and our product, but what it looks like in terms of our career direction. It really does feel like the possibilities are vast. While our structure isn’t flat, there’s definitely a sense that if you’ve got a great idea, it will be heard. The founders sit in the open workspace with the rest of the team. People - As someone who’s passionate about the people who make up a company and their experience, it’s such a great bonus when those people are genuinely fantastic human beings. PlayQ hires people who are extremely talented and hardworking, have a unique viewpoint, and also play well with others. The results are a really enjoyable work experience - everyone’s doing their part and we have a lot of fun doing it. We hold monthly themed happy hours, and it’s not uncommon for team members get together outside of work. Always a good sign. Balance - While I’m constantly challenged, and there are crunch times, on the whole required hours are both very doable and flexible. At my last job, lunch breaks were the things of legend and typically you scarfed a sandwich while hiding in the mail closet. Now, more often than not, I get outside for some air, and, because of our incredible location, can even take a stroll by the beach. I have time for my personal life after work, and I’m not so drained from the workday that I crash the minute I get home. Location - On that note, I love our office. It’s beautifully designed and offers a number of different options for different working styles. The open workspaces are typically a little quieter (but every new employee is gifted a set of noise cancelling headphones as well), while our lounge is a great place to kick back in a beanbag chair in the sun or chat about a project you’re working on. You can even sit on one of the patios and work or make calls when the weather’s nice. And let’s face it, in Santa Monica it’s almost always nice.

Cons

This is tough, but one downside could be if you’re into a ladder kind of development structure. You won’t have a defined path laid out for you here, and it really is up to you to ask questions and have conversations with your manager as you start to see areas of opportunity. I personally love it, as I don’t feel pigeonholed in any way and my manager is incredibly supportive in helping me create my future at PlayQ. But if you’re not comfortable taking the reins on your development, I can see how this could be off-putting.
