Pros

It's clear when you talk to colleagues that have been with the company for a long time that working for P&G used to be grand. It's hard to make it through a week without somebody waxing nostalgic about the good old days when the company had a powerhouse R&D organization paired with the most elite marketers in the world. Some policies and practices (namely pay and a few benefits) still reflect that caliber of company and its those aspects that keep good people around.

Cons

Since the mid-90s, executives have consistently embarked on a path of systematically gutting the organization of most core competencies. In a never-ending march to lower costs, they have outsourced so much of the company's operations that employees are often little more than rubber-stamping yes-men with no grasp of the details involved in their work. Middle management is a cesspool of positive thinking zealots who dismiss uncomfortable facts and manage by political popularity rather than business impact or results. What success the company has continued to realize is typically driven by experienced personnel who were around back in the days that P&Gers actually did real work. As these people retire, the organization will continue to suffer brain drain until all that's left are people who blindly oversee vendors while reading Rhonda Byrne's "The Promise". Sadly, positive thinking will not be enough to right this ship.

Pros

Best reason: Looks good on resume. Brand names.

Cons

Cons: P&G was a great company (at one time) and one of the best in the country. Here's what's happened to me. I was told I was "crucial to the success of Proctor & Gamble". In fact, every one of us (including our managers and those above them) were told this over and over again. We were doing a great job. Then without notice we were all told there we were going into a "transition" with two other companies. In fact, they laid off thousands of us this month alone. They only reported 1600 to the press, however. I've since learned they've done this consistently from time to time always without notice. We got NO severance pay for our loyalty. Our benefits are lost the month we're gone. Our careers gone. In a time when the economy is so horrible they couldn't have done a less respectful American deed. I'm stunned with disbelief, really.

Pros

-Nice office space and big desk, and free coffee : ) -Lots of opportunities for training -learn a lot about the business -Generally quite nice people, very diverse -Decent salary and benefits. -Work not that difficult (although you get a lot of it) -good place to improve presentation and marketing skills -flexible working hours/time -sponsoring of professional exams and training (they pay even if you fail unlike most other firms) -relatively informal work environment -safe and stable (although can be a con as well)

Cons

-very, very bureaucratic -the jargon, at first seems like a different language -more time spent on admin than actual work -some very brainwashed colleagues ! -lots of internal politics -promotion very hit and miss (depends as much on how you sound or get on with your boss, than tangible results) -some very mediocre hires -a much higher % of unprofessionalism than other firms (i.e. fully-charged shouting matches, not replying to phone call, emails! -a culture of never admitting any mistakes, hence no one takes responsibility for anything -hr not that great...
