Great Company Policies but Not for Everyone

Pros

They have wonderful company policies and compensation overall, for example, generally decent pay, average medical benefits, good other benefits, flexible work options, volunteerism, focus on employees - as a policy.

Cons

Whether you really experience the wonderful policies of the Firm depends on exactly who you work for. Essentially some managers are allowed to run departments like unchecked tyrants. And when complaints are brought to HR, they essentially are neutered and cannot aid you in any way other to help you to deal with your situation emotionally. Basically, HR puts the onus back on the employee, who has no control over the situation. One bad policy the firm has is essentially grading employees on the curve. They still use a numbered rating system and everyone is a 3 (out of 1-5) except a couple lucky people in each department. Of course, there are probably plenty of 1s and 2s, but even though I was rated exceptional in two out of three categories, and meeting expectations in the third (category ratings only have 3 levels), I was still rated a 3. When I asked how I could accomplish a rating of 4 or 5, I was given the run around - no answer. And I've worked for the firm for more than 10 years and have earned many a 5 prior to this newer policy. This policy encourages mediocrity.

Pros

Fascinating projects There is an awareness that the work is having a positive impact on society Smaller teams, and really smart people. The culture is one of respect, politeness, and for the most part is non-hostile (at least in Health & Analytics) Mostly a stress-free, happy work environment (when you are not stressed out about losing your job)

Cons

Very odd environment, extremely introverted. A workplace where people shut their doors all day and rarely come out except to eat and use the bathroom. Hard to make friends. A revolving door. Seems like people are always being downsized and new people coming in. The net/net is that the company is shrinking A lot of competition between departments. Seems like they fight over scraps, grants, etc. Lots of turf wars. The oddest thing with Battelle is that it feels like employment there is a game of musical chairs - All researchers are responsible for finding their own work. When one comes off a project, it is up to then to find more work. Since there seems to be less and less work, there are always people that come off projects that cannot get on new projects. Makes for a strange working environment. Technology-wise, there are a lot of old-timers that have a lot of influence on technology usage, this group is slow to adopt new technologies. Felt like my technical skills eroded. Odd to work for the analytics group using technologies that are 10 years old.

Pros

First regional sales manager was a very fair and decent person, a pleasure to report to and helped us to try and meet our goals. They are generous with paid time off. Some of the co-workers were very cool people to work with.

Cons

There's huge turnover with managers at this firm. We inherited a different sales manager over time and it became painful to report to this person so the team fell apart., it was like watching a train wreck in progress so quite disastrous. There are some managers who don't understand why sales at this accounting firm is important and they refuse to take their blinders off. The marketing dept is a disaster and painful to work with as well.
