Pros

I really enjoyed my time at the firm. I was able to take on a lot of new projects and learn many new things. This was not a traditional admin. Type of role. I helped with matters from staffing to billing while also supporting the tax team.

Cons

The hours were challenging during busy season. This is probably the hardest part to adjust to, however it is really worthwhile to be part of such an amazing firm.

Pros

Good coworkers; you learn a lot within a short period of time. They pay for your CPA exam study materials (Becker) and exam fees the first time (this is pretty standard across most public accounting firms though). I like the middle-market focus.

Cons

The long hours in busy season (55-90 hours/week). The strong over-emphasis on the number of hours worked rather than efficiency. If you're a good worker, you get "rewarded" with more work. They preach "the power of being understood" and work/life flexibility, but when it comes right down to it, neither of these fairly apply to the staff.

Pros

Pros are it is a national firm so they have some name recognition but mostly only recruiters and other CPAs have heard of McGs. CPEs are free. They pay for Becker material but it must be paid back to them if you choose to leave the company within 2 years. Nice location with a parking garage. When its nice out you can walk to the North End. You can exit to larger or smaller firms. Free soda.

Cons

This is about the assurance dept...Tax is seperate and the few seniors I worked with from Tax were great and I think the culture is different in Tax. I want to share this info for other people going through campus recruiting like I did because these reviews on here have been very helpful for me. I was very green and went in with the best intentions so if I can advise other recent graduates it would be great. I left MG somewhat depressed and 10 pounds heavier. Negative environment. I wish I believed the reviews here before I signed on for McGladrey out of college. If I knew what I know now I would have turned down my offer and chose a different firm. Mass terminations, cut throat environment, and no work life balance are all true. Turn over is so high that I often found abandoned stacks of business cards just lying around open cubicles from people who no longer work at the firm. During busy season I noticed a few people who seemed like they were taking uppers possibly adderall...one staff asked me if I knew where she could get adderall. Morale is low. No diversity....its a boys club. A lot of negative people who openly hate their jobs and lives work in Mg assurance....it goes against the culture if you are a happy person and/or try to stay positive. To fit in you must be at least somewhat unhappy and stressed out. I worked with managers who were pretty open about avoiding going to the office, goodbye parties, and other work functions.
