Pros

Great pay, little effort required.

Cons

The company has gotten used to a very slow moving software engineering department, and people think that's the way it should be done. However, it isn't. People slack, and it's ok, because managers slack, too. Most engineers have insufficient experience, and get promoted only so they don't seek jobs elsewhere, or because they have stuck around long enough. Few people would be able to find a job with the same title and role in a real tech company. Sticking around longer is definitely harming to one's career.

Pros

It is great to work in a company that puts out to the world that it is female led. On the outside looking in, R29 has really put out a great reputation. The office is full of bright, young, creative and hard workers. You can really feel that everyone has a love for whatever job they are doing. There are a ton of perks like a beauty sale (everything is a dollar and proceeds are donated to a charity), coffee and bucha on tap in the summer and FREE health insurance, to name a few. When it is good there, it is REALLY good.

Cons

There is an intense lack of structure, training and strong management. Refinery29 likes to think that it is a "start-up" still and tries to operate as such. The ping-pong table is NOT fooling anyone. There needs to be a system put in place to regulate how departments work, rate employee performance, train in areas where employees are lacks, praise success and set expectations. Putting a whole bunch of young people in a building does create magic but it does not always create the most productive work environment. If R29 is this successful without structure imagine if they had some #unstoppable. R29 loves to rant and rave about being female led and diverse but their board members were all white men until last year (added a white female). Most of the "business" (CFO/Head of ___/CEO) is handled white men. The women who are the face of the company and the creatives are white women. The colorful variety of women that R29 uses in ads or on the website is not how the office is at all.

Pros

It's a treat to work with so many passionate, creative and smart people. R29 is growing fast and reaching so many people globally, but still retains the startup spirit where people can dream big and then see those dreams come to life. We work VERY hard - no way around that - but it's nice to know that the hard work goes towards a mission that as a millennial women myself, I care deeply about. I came to R29 as a fan of the brand, the work they do, and everything they stand for, and I can say honestly that the leaders of the company are committed to making a difference and championing women.

Cons

The entrepreneurial spirit means there's a huge appetite for growth and scale, which sometimes can mean high expectations and overload of work. As we grow, there's still a lot of experimentation and trial and error on projects, formats, and processes, which can be frustrating at times. I think the company should focus on doing less but doing it better - but obviously there will be growing pains no matter what.
