Morale is low

Pros

Amazing people and exposure to high level clients and work.

Cons

Overall morale is extremely low - no upward trajectory even though they promise it to everyone. They care too much about employees' social status - the more followers you have on IG, the higher they think of you and your abilities. Like a popularity contest for adults.

growing pains

Pros

The message of the company is incredible: Inclusive, political, relationship, beauty and entertainment coverage for the modern woman with a funky and feminist twist. Many people within the company highly embody this message and are a true pleasure to work with. This is true for the CEOs and many of the higher-ups, their vision is great, it's just very, very difficult getting it implemented.

Cons

Unfortunately, working at R29 proves some harsh realities many of us don't want to admit about corporate feminism. Others here treat fellow female coworkers with disrespect and have outdated knowledge and viewpoints on everything from queer culture to sex positivity, to actual knowledge of what it means to be body positive, despite internal campaigns that promote all of the above. The message and direction from the company as a whole to what managers want to listen to and implement have such a disparity it's dismantling.

Takes Advantage of Women in Media

Pros

Brand recognition and that’s it

Cons

Refinery29 takes advantage of young women who are excited by their seemingly inclusive brand. They excite you with opportunities to “prove yourself” with an entry level position but make advancement near to impossible. The work hours are incredibly unreasonable, dangerous even. The amount of hours I worked and were not paid for are mind blowing. There is also a toxic work environment of managers with no managerial training trying to be buddies and get drunk with the staff.
