Pros

Great place to be an engineer, technical career ladder allows for advancement without taking on a management role. Great culture, good people. Well known and respected brand name that carries a lot of weight in the industry. As a friend from Exxon put it, when something goes wrong, your best defense is to be able to say "but we even used Schlumberger".

Cons

Limited opportunities in management for any disciplines other than EE or Mechanical engineering. Field experience is also generally necessary for advancement. Fixed-step advancement program for university hires can be a pain.

Pros

Worlds largest oilfield service co Opportunity (expectation) to work internationally Systems and processes exist to ensure uniformi in all geomarkets Plenty of capital when oil at $100+ wti

Cons

Middle level managers do not listen. They have adopted manage by objectives reward system slp3, but there is disconnect between goals and value, implementation, resources, and getting things done. Managers are rude, insensitive, and moderate at best. SLB does not value different nor critical thinking. It is focused on NOC opportunities, so in America loss leader. Because their systems are rigorous, they believe a monkey can lead, and pay that way.

Pros

For me, the best part of Schlumberger is Diversity: there are unlimited chances to work with people from different countries, different cultrure background. This is really interesting! By the way, Work/Life balance is also good. Longer annual leave than most of the other companies.

Cons

Some management rules related to Oilfield Service are not suitable in a Software R&D center. The process and standard of promoting a Software Engineer are still needed to be improved. Some people with poor technique skills get promoted while some really good developers cannot. Sometimes, it is not important how much you know, but how much you show.
