Leadership is disconnected from reality. Decisions felt reactive rather than strategic, contributing to workload burnout. Bloated middle management. My team was managed by a former IC who did not possess the people skills required to lead a team. Team culture and morale took a nosedive. Career progression is difficult unless you’re part of the inner circle or play politics well.

I’ve seen people criticize the toxic culture at Shopify, but in reality, there is no culture at all. Culture is about people coming together to achieve something collectively, but at Shopify, there’s no real sense of team. Everyone is out for themselves, and if that means throwing others under the bus, so be it. Communication is both immature and aggressive. Management feels like a group of vultures hovering over you, waiting for the smallest mistake just to call you out. There’s no camaraderie, no support, just a cutthroat environment. Micromanaging disguised as founders mindset.
