Pros

Ulta has a nice atmosphere and the store stays very clean. Working with a large amount of make up brands makes work interesting.

Cons

Managers are very disrespectful to staff and customers. They sit around in their office all day long and call up to the front register to tell the sales associate to work harder, while they are just surfing the web. While they only hire petite little girls they also expect 2 or 3 of them to stock the entire store in one morning.

Pros

It is a great opportunity to grow and develop stylists. With an average of over 2,500 customers a week, there is a lot of opportunity to build your book. Most of the employees are great, they offer more benefits that any salon I have heard of.

Cons

They treat every location as though it should perform as well as their best locations, a nice standard, but unrealistic, especially when some of the locations are placed poorly and circulate a poor demographic. There is no support, just getting yelled at, or talked down to, usually my retail management, who know nothing about hair. There is an overall disrespect for hairdressers at Ulta, the retail staff is encouraged to be active in the salon, yet they continuously overstep their bounds and there is an infestation of the idea that the retail staff know half as much about hair as the licensed hairdressers! The salon module and business plan is extremely flawed, and unless evolved, it will fail. The level and commission system is based purely on revenue generated for the company, and not skill and education, thus losing integrity with the clients that believe they are getting a better service when paying a higher price. Overall, if you really need a job, this isn't a bad place; but I would be cautious before thinking a career is possible here, and a good or bad district manager can make or break your workplace satisfaction with Ulta!

Pros

Salon Discount Gratis Friends and Family Discount

Cons

Only being part of the "management team" when it suits them More responsibility than most of the senior management and making half of what they make. Took 3 years to be promoted to keyholder from prestige consultant. Was denied a promotion I was promised because I asked not to work a close/open every Sat./Sun. after eight weeks in a row of doing so. Low pay compared to other cosmetic companies. If you actually have to support yourself then you definitely cant do it here. The 25% discount sucks and most of the public coupons are a better discount unless you spend over $15. Lots of empty promises and no recognition for going way above and beyond. Most of the management are incredibly lazy and just pawn their job off on others. So much is expected that's its very taxing and you are never rewarded for a job well done just scrutinized when you miss goals. They want to have a "big" team but hiring more people means that most associates get less than 10 hours a week when the good associates should just be getting more hours. You also cannot get benefits unless you are a manager (keyholders although full time are excluded) and the ones you can buy for being a full time employee are a complete joke and ridiculously expensive for the coverage you get.
