Leadership is Lost

Pros

Smart people who are invested in the value of Professional Learning work here. Strong solutions with a ton of potential.

Cons

Leadership for the Professional Learning Group is oblivious. Lack of product vision over last few years has led to stagnation while the market kept moving. Utter lack of brand recognition in the market can be attributed to lack of market knowledge on the part of brand leadership. No clear strategic plan. Siloed divisions and departments have no idea what the other is doing- total lack of connection and missed opportunity to collaborate.

Bad response to covid on Sales side

Pros

Great ability to choose your work pace, and really it seems generally difficult to get fired here; they rather keep you than fire you, if you'll stay. Great education/tuition reimbursement benefits, and generally good healthcare coverage (average Aetna health plan when it comes to the out of pocket limit so not the best, expensive dental plan, but a very good vision plan). Lots of days off for an American Company

Cons

Lots of bad behavior, even teetering on abusive, with no repercussions. Terrible communication and lots of forced classes, etc. Forced over 100 people to a "Sales Kickoff" event in LA in the summer of 2022, resulting in a super-spreader event. Employees were dispersed to other countries and states sick (as instructed, they were to leave immediately if they did not yet have a fever) and then were given no compensation for hotel rooms they needed to quarantine when they got home (many people had unvaccinated very young children or elderly family members they could not put at risk). The company had to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the SKO event, of which there is enormous social pressure to go, but would not help employees when they needed it most. This was really horrible to see. They are having it again this year despite being on a hiring freeze and not allowing sales people travel "for budget reasons" since the company supposedly mismanaged their money for the past few years. It seems like it can be hard to move to different departments. You manager will find out early in the process and can easily block you from leaving the team. You will also have very little bargaining power, if any, when it comes to increasing compensation, so ask for as much as you can get on hiring--beyond that it is based on annual reviews, and it is all but impossible to get one indicating that you excelled in your role (which I was told directly) even if you go above and beyond your role. I was shut down just when asking for parity with a new colleague who did not have more experience and whom I trained.

A shadow of its former self

Pros

Genuinely nice and hardworking colleagues, exposure to a lot of functional areas, redundancy packages relatively generous

Cons

This is really difficult for me to write, as I used to be one of this company’s biggest cheerleaders. I grew my career with this company, and I am grateful for that. However, something has shifted in the culture in recent years and it’s not the place it used to be. The constant redundancies are exhausting, and everyone is just waiting for their turn. Redundancies are no longer announced (as there are far too many of them), so you usually find out that a person is gone when you try to email them. Those left behind are simply expected to do more with less, even though all those people are already working ridiculous hours to get the work done. No attempt is made to actually look at the business model, and the decision makers who should ultimately be held accountable seem untouchable (the same goes for those exhibiting toxic work behaviours). The LinkedIn marketing and the reality are very different. I can count on one hand the number of people I knew who could actually take ‘Happy Fridays’… the rest of us knew that we’d be made to feel guilty for taking them, or that we’d be making our workload even worse. Now that I’m out, I’ve realised how much happier I can be elsewhere. On the plus side, this place prepared me for literally anything that comes my way in the future. I feel awful for those left behind to somehow get the work done with the limited resources they have left, while trying to still believe in it all.
