Pros

The company culture is great. 35 hour work week is nice. Working in the Hoboken offices is great. Transportation is a block away and the town itself is lively. Great food. People at the company are very nice and willing to help you.

Cons

I really enjoyed my experience with the company. Some upper management can be more helpful than others in ensuring that you are doing your best to move along your career path. Others expect you to be very self motivated. Which is OK if your the right type of person.

Pros

It is wonderful to work for an historical, family-run business where our mission involves spreading knowledge internationally. I am grateful to work with such intelligent, like-minded individuals who are not afraid to give their all for the careers they love. I have made wonderful friends in our offices around the world, and have gotten to travel quite extensively.

Cons

From my point of view, senior management seems very formal and overly distant--coming from an organzation with an 'open door' policy about asking questions/learning from our management, it seems strange to be cut out of the line of communication and discouraged from asking questions and sharing information across the company. As with many academic publishers, I am assuming, compensation could be better, we are understaffed constantly and expected to work unreasonable hours, considering our salaries. I routinely work 12 hour days, despite low compensation.

Pros

Wiley is has excellent benefits and considers itself "The Place to Be" It has a 8:30-4:30 work day, company sponsored cafeteria, company bus that takes you to and from Manhattan, 401K and traditional pension, very nice holiday parties, mother's room for lactating mothers and an all around congenial work environment.

Cons

There is really a lack of career development. There are basically 3 tracks: Editorial, Marketing and Production. If you do not start out in sales there is very little chance that you can advance in Editorial or Marketing. Unfortunately, you can not get any entry sales rep position unless you are < 3 years out of college. What that means is if you don't make publishing your career choice out of college forget about it for a career with growth.
