The best place in Silicon Valley to work

Pros

I love the team, atmosphere, diversity, the work, and the mission of the company. There is a "no jerk" policy and it goes a long way to create a supportive and collaborative environment. The work is challenging, as we are inventing the future of the kitchen. The organization is run flat, so there is little hierarchy or political b.s.. I have been at the company for six years, and it is amazing what we have achieved in that timeframe. I couldn't be happier.

Cons

With the incredible growth comes some growing pains. The team is proactively working through it though, and we are on a great trajectory.

Pros

Nice people: *Incredibly* nice. Like, change-a-coworker's-tire-in-the-parking-lot nice. Cross-functional cooperation!: Getting a frontend developer to solve a problem on the blog is just a matter of sending a quick slack. Teams aren't siloed and it makes the product better and the projects more interesting. A chance to move the needle: Small company = big chances to make stuff happen. True work-life balance: Need to leave at a certain time to pick your kid up? You're in good company! I've never had a meeting scheduled before 9 or after 5 in the time I've been here, not even with colleagues in other time zones.

Cons

I definitely gained 5 lbs right after I started at Yummly - between the catered lunches, the "snack wall" and people bringing in recipes they're testing for the platform, it's dangerous (but delicious). But: Totally worth it.

Pros

The culture at Yummly is one of the most supportive I have ever experienced. People are happy to help others on any task, and are very encouraging of others' personal growth. Personally, I came onto the team as a data scientist, but over the first year of working at Yummly I discovered that working on building API's and keeping the site up and performant was far better fit for me. Despite not having had any prior experience in that field, the CTO himself helped encourage me & spent time training me in this new field, until I eventually completely switched my role. Since then, I've been given the opportunity to work on front end code, DB management, dev ops work, and even non-programing related work like product design.

Cons

The work can sometimes be mentally exhausting, which is something to be expected when you're on new engineering ground.
