Pros

Smartest people in the industry Beautiful office in Singapore (fresh flowers!) Great, friendly traders (most decent, most polite ones in the oil trading industry)

Cons

If you’re being interviewed, please ask why the position is vacant. It is VERY MOST LIKELY vacant because someone could not take the job insecurity within, or the lack of future advancement prospects within. This company is driven by efficiencies. And as such, the higher levels are extremely communicative about downsizing (because their world-class unrivalled integrated trading system has upended the need for so 70% people) or transferring functions elsewhere (because employing staff from Eastern Europe and Malaysia is much more cost-effective than hiring people from London and Singapore). It was not a great feeling joining a prestigious company, only to be faced with the nagging job insecurity and lack of career advancement opportunities. I had so many sleepless nights. And it’s like a survival of the fittest inside. Cut-throat, dog-eat-dog competition. If you are a gentle, humanist, sensitive person, don’t join. It’s essentially a money-making machine, and totally devoid of camaraderie.

Pros

Competitive benefits. Some locations in the US have very strong employee engagement and culture. The further the locations are from the main "hubs" (Chicago and Houston) the more engaged and productive they seem to be. The only exception to this is Supply and Trading.

Cons

I can only speak for US downstream business. Some leaders are unethical. They seem to be untouchable because they get the jobs done. There is little attention on "how" they get things done. Leadership development seems very weak, disorganized and sometimes just "on mute". Very shortsighted in this realm.

Pros

Medical dental wellness plans pension 401(k) match geared to a much younger generation

Cons

2020 was a hard year, with COVID and the company's reorganization. Employees were not allowed to apply for roles that interested them, and the result was being over or under-qualified and/or just not interested. Morale still suffers, and stress levels are high as the layoffs continue. Unfortunately, there is also an ageism problem, which adds to the discontent/stress. Bernard Looney' resignation as CEO due to misconduct and Dave Lawler leaving shortly after has caused even greater uncertainty and mistrust in the organization.
