Pros

- Very competitive compensation packages - Flexible working opportunities to help work/life balance - For most people, job safety for many years - If you perform well, you are offered interesting opportunities and projects, but only to a certain level. - If you are a contractor, you also have a lot of job security as BP holds on to contractors for many years (whilst making employees redundant every 4-5 years). Summary: if you want a nice, steady job with a good amount of challenges, and are not worried about developing your skills and are happy working at a low/medium level in an organisation for many years, BP is a great company to work for.

Cons

- Very little in the way of career progression opportunities - there is a very low ceiling for the vast majority and leadership roles are saved for ex-Accenture and those whose 'face fits' as recognition of real work is trumped by politics and meeting diversity statistics. Do not expect any leadership level role if you are under the age of 45. - Whilst there are a lot of good people in BP, there are large pockets within the organisation where behaviors clearly breach BP's own code of conduct, but this is simply accepted as those people have been in the company for 20-30 years. - In the Sunbury office, you'll barely get a "hello" from anyone over the age of 40; there is a feeling of people holding on just for the paycheck and/or for retirement. - For some, the unspoken expectation around working hours could be challenging (~10 a day) but this is the norm in most professional industries today. Those working the old-fashioned "9-5" are quietly looked down upon.

BPL48 does not equal BP

Recommend
Business Outlook

Pros

Nice offices, front line employees are great, flat organization, large resource base, relocating to Denver, Resource development is a high priority.

Cons

BPL48 is still acting like gas is <$1/MCFD and <$30/bbl, cutting people and safety processes. Result is poorer production and an unsafe work environment.

Trading Development Programme, Singapore

Business Outlook

Pros

Pretty good development programme. Diverse bunch of rotations enabling one to pick up every detail about oil trading. Flat organisation for most part in day-to-day business sense, easy to reach out to mid level management.

Cons

Poor programme management (no trader jobs at the end of the scheme even if you pass the programme) - so go into this expecting it to be a commercial scheme rather than trading scheme. Discriminatory practices between geographical regions - this is a western company and sadly that still means that London and Chicago call shots on everything. This means grads in western offices get better pay/ pay rises while grads in the east sometimes don't even get pay increments. Similarly, more trading jobs in the west at the end of the programme while east rarely hires. Management promises hold no worth - promises (mainly on jobs) are made and withdrawn arbitrarily citing seemingly ridiculous reasons. Definitely right place for someone who is very good at office politics and so-so at actual work. Poor bonuses - Expect bonuses that are inconsequential whilst on the trading scheme. Base pay in Singapore (and the pace of pay revision) is very suppressed compared to western offices contrary to what one might expect due to ordinary inflation pressures. Slow organisation - immense size means sometimes there is less work and more meetings but suspect this should be similar in every big organisation.
