I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Cengage in Jun 2015
Interview
Phone interview first. Didn't want to move beyond that b/c job involves far more travel than indicated in posted ad. Ad said 50% travel but actually job is 75% travel or more. Saw this supported by comment on Glassdoor company comments, as well.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Cengage (Belmont, CA) in Aug 2013
Interview
Applied through LinkedIn. Phone screening with the recruiter who posted the job. She forwarded my info on to hiring manager. Phone interview with hiring manager. Three rounds of writing samples that were reviewed by internal and external experts. Then invited for in person interview. The in person interview actually consisted of an initial interview with manager, a series of 3 or 4 additional interviews with various people in the company, and then a wrap up with the manager. The entire time I got the impression that they were trying to convince me to work there - seems they had already decided they wanted to hire me based on my writing samples. The in person interview was not difficult, but the entire process was fairly difficult in that it took a very long time and I had to be very persistent and meet the deadlines for the writing samples they set out. I'm sure this is how they weed a lot of people out because it did take quite a bit of time and the directions were very specific. You couldn't just pull something you wrote in school out of a drawer and use it - you had to write everything from scratch. The entire process took 5 months from the time I applied until the time I was hired due to bankruptcy status and hiring freeze.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
For one of the writing samples, you are given a chapter of a book and then you have to write a few problems to accompany a specific chapter of the book. You then have to indicate how you would change the problem to work for a different textbook.

Interview
Had a single in-person interview with two managers, there was only one round of interviews before they selected someone for the position. Interview lasted about an hour, and I did most of the talking in response to the interview questions.
