I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Galway) in Apr 2016
Interview
I had to design a shop on Shopify and then received an email to arrange a Skype interview. I found making the shop part of the interview very fun because they didn't give any specific guidelines in terms of content (you had to include several features the website offered, but everything "creative" was left up to me). The Skype interview was also fine, it was very casual which was good because I felt no pressure, but at the same time they didn't ask me any questions about my career goals or why I thought I would be a good fit for the company. Looking back, I find it frustrating that they limited the conversation to the "tell me about your life" question, because it bears no relevance to my future. If they wanted to know about how my personality "fit" with the company, they could have asked me questions about my work style or my personality type or anything that would have actually been beneficial for them or me to see if it was a good match. Instead I just felt like the cool kids rejected me because my "story" wasn't exciting enough for them.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
No questions, they literally just ask you to tell them your life story. Not very many prompts, so make sure you have enough to talk about for 40 or so minutes.

Interview
The first interview is a "Life Story" - and it really is a conversation between two people, discussing your life and the events that lead you to this day. It isn't scripted, it is comfortable, and nothing is premeditated. Really. You can choose in which direction to take the interview...
which is likely part of the test, but it makes it low stress. It is a good reflection of company values too.
This is just the first step in the process.
