I applied online. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Apr 2020
Interview
Multiple Steps - good opportunity to get a feel for those you could work with if you were successful candidate - process was a bit longer given the pandemic. All interviews were virtual.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Nov 2017
Interview
Speedy, had five webcam interviews in 20 minutes. The five interviewers each asked general expected questions. Was one of their first times attempting this interview style. Good communication before and after interview.

Question 1
What's a new skill that you've recently developed?
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Nov 2017
Interview
Applied on their website /employee referral (Nov 2017) for the HR choose your adventure posting they had at the time. I have a pal that works there and loves it. Suggested that I apply for the HR stream even though I have zero HR experience but apparently they like that so you can be trained to their specifications. Recruiter got back in touch pretty quickly and appointment was set up for the first interview.
Stage 1: 20 minute Skype call with 4 different recruiters (5 mins each) mostly on why i'd like to work at Shopify. They seemed like nice people but I did repeat myself because they all asked the same thing.
Recruiter emailed me back within 24 hrs that I had qualified for the next round and interview was set up for a week later.
Stage 2: 60 minute Skype call with 1 recruiter for the infamous Life Story. Mine lasted about 45 minutes and again very informal and she was nice. Also talked about my current position. After we were done the interviewer let me know that there were a lot of people that applied for the position but someone would get back to me within a week (at that point I had a feeling I was out). A week later no contact so waited a couple more days then sent an email to the recruiter that I had been emailing with who then said they'd get in touch with the recruiter I interviewed with. Following day got a missed call but they emailed to tell me that they had decided to move forward with other candidates.
Some points to note/ Suggestions for Shopify:
1. All the people that interviewed me were all in HR but had no prior HR experience to joining the team.
2. They genuinely seemed like cool peeps.
3. I had read some people's reviews on here to know that their choice would be highly subjective to what they prefer (culture fit) so I wasn't too surprised.
4. Shopify should come up with a neutral way to communicate so they don't come across as if they are offering you a job when really they are not.
5. For the stage 1 part, maybe they should come up with a set of specific questions (2 - 3 each as each has it's 5 mins with you) and divvy them between the 4 recruiters doing the interview, that way they are not asking the same thing.
6. I get that the company wants to make interviewing "cool" but perhaps find a way to expedite the process. I was lucky my process was done in 2 weeks but some on here were interviewed for months and then no offer (back to #4). Although, I wonder if they would have ever gotten back to me had I not emailed to inquire/get some feedback.
Overall it seems that nice people work there and they seem to care about the employees.
