Company challenged by internal misalignment and PE pressure

Business Outlook

Pros

Cengage is at the forefront of critical discussions and debate on the future of learning, workforce, and AI transformation. Thoughtful CEO and business unit leaders wanting to push the company forward as an industry leader.

Cons

As a private equity backed company looking to go public, there is a lot of pressure to differentiate from its industry peers, however, that top-down pressure has resulted in an identity crisis externally and internally. There is misalignment, lack of trust, and mixed messaging between business units. There are constant reorgs as the company seeks to cut costs, which results in lost productivity, lack of cohesive vision, and erosion of trust. The company is behind the ball on AI usage and innovativeness in their products - the headlines are just that, headlines.
