Pros

Excellent culture at a direct management and team level. Decision makers, VP and up are incompetent. Company car and gas (up to 4 year old Rav 4, no frills). Amex.

Cons

Long days (expect 50+ hours, home office one day/week), high expectations, brutal lay offs, business strategy changes with the wind. Account executive bonus is annual, so be prepared to live off of 70k for 11 months out of the year and is discretionary- not to be paid out if laid off and may reduce your unemployment benefits. Below industry norms and they won't mention it until 5 interviews and the offer has been extended. The in person door knocking sales style is obsolete for any other professional career path. They burn through account reps and treat them as disposable.

At Cengage Group, we know the significant impact our employees have in powering our business, especially our sales teams. We value the work our teams do each day, and regularly monitor industry standards around wages to ensure we are providing fair and competitive compensation and benefit offerings. I’m sorry to hear that your experience with senior leadership did not live up to your expectations. We pride ourselves on transparency and candor, and as part of this, senior leaders and the executive team often discuss the rapid change that is taking place in education, and the ways in which we as a business must evolve to meet this need. This can sometimes mean making difficult decisions in restructuring teams that remove some roles, but also create new ones. We are committed to having a healthy and growing business. We do not take these decisions lightly and understand how they can create uncertainty. Thank you for sharing your feedback. I wish you the best in your future endeavors. Pros

The people you work with day to day are some of the nicest people you will meet. The benefits are good; slightly above average for the area.

Cons

Whatever you do, do no take medical leave if you work at Cengage. You will be fired. I know of at least 5 people that this has happened to. I know one settled a wrongful termination lawsuit, not sure about the others. Cengage was so great 10+ years ago. It went downhill fast. Constant layoffs and budget cuts. They brag about how they only have a 37.5 hour work week. That's not accurate at all. Typical work week is about 60 hours if you want get any sort of positive performance review. People are jumping ship left and right and for good reason. Don't speak up. Head your head down. Maybe you will fly under the radar. If you have an honest conversation with any of your superiors, it will be used against you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am glad to hear that you were satisfied with the benefits that we provide, and I appreciate the positive candor about your co-workers. Employee wellbeing is a priority at Cengage, so I take your claims very seriously. There is no instance in which an employee has been or would be terminated for taking medical leave. Cengage follows all applicable federal, state and local laws requiring job protection during medical leave, and we strictly prohibit any form of retaliation against an employee for requesting or taking a medical leave. Cengage provides up to 25 weeks of short-term disability pay (80-100%) and long-term disability insurance after that period. In terms of workload, we strive to enable all employees to prioritize work-life balance and encourage employees to work with their managers and HR partners to discuss what that looks like on an individual, personal level. Thank you for the more than ten years you have spent supporting our business and wish you luck in your future endeavors. Best, Michelle Bonomini, VP of Total Rewards & HR Operations

Pros

The working atmosphere was great. Great people throughout the company at all levels. People enjoyed being there. If you hit bonus, nice payouts.

Cons

Cengage Unlimited isn't holding up to the pedestal it was put on by upper management. Too much money being lost every quarter has turned it into a not so fun place to be at. Lots of cuts over the years, especially last month has turned it into a skeleton crew doing the same amount of work, if not more.
