Pros

I've worked here for a while now and have very few complaints. Pay seems to be competitive. Benefits are decent. Environment is pretty laid back but all the work still gets done.

Cons

Frequent reorganizations have pushed many people out of jobs. This seems to happen a few times a year. After every one we are assured that the reorg is complete and we are all safe, then 5 months later there's another reorg and seemingly great employees who have been here for many years are let go with no justification other than 'the higher ups terminated your position.'

Pros

Good people who work really hard and believe in education. Decent work life balance in my experience, but some are forced to work very long hours

Cons

I was at this company for 10 years. I bought into the culture hype and the ra-ra Cengage crap, I was a very loyal and dedicated employee who often had 3-4 departments under me; more work than was reasonable. However, no one is immune from the unceremonious and continuous cycle of layoffs and reorganization, and I fell victim to a reorg that stuck me with the worst boss of my life, and ended up leaving before I developed a dependency on Xanax to get through working with them. Despite repeated complaints and an entire department walking out, that boss was retained for more than 2 years, while good, experienced people left because of how bad they were. Every reorg is presented with "well the last one didn't work, but this time we figured it out!" only to be told the same thing 6 months later. Each layoff puts more pressure and more work on the remaining staff, while internal systems and structures are antiquated and almost impossible to navigate. The industry is in serious decline and the pressure to be profitable is enormous; it seems their only tool to do that is staffing reductions, even though there are repeated boondoggles and pet projects and acquisitions that receive massive funding but go nowhere. How well you do, in my experience, very much depends on whether you are your boss's favorite rather than whether you do a good job; talent actively identified as "retain" are not, in fact, retained, with dumb reasons made up as to why they can't stay or advance. Lots of decisions they make are real head-scratchers. Bottom line: if you have a choice between Cengage and a different company to work at, choose the other company, as there is ZERO job security at Cengage.

Thank you for taking the time to leave an honest review about your experience working at Cengage Group. I appreciate the positive remarks about your former colleagues – I agree and have experienced the same dedication in working with individuals across the organization. I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with a reorganization and your former boss. I understand the impact that a difficult work relationship can have on one's job satisfaction and overall well-being. We take these matters seriously and are committed to fostering a supportive and fair workplace for all employees. Organizational changes and layoffs can be challenging and sometimes create additional pressure on the remaining staff. However, we are continuously working to improve our internal systems and structures to ensure efficiency and ease of navigation. To your point on loyalty, I believe the post you are referring to was discussing advice to the young workforce and whether longevity in a role or at a company matters. My advice in that post, and I uphold it, is there can be opportunities that gaining the ability to influence, which most often comes with longevity. At Cengage Group, we are an organization that value candor and dialogue, and it is a key contributor to our success. You are correct, that this does not mean loyalty should come above all else, but rather every individual needs to gauge if a particular company at this particular time is the right platform for their talents. Thank you for your more than eight years of service. I wish you the best in your next endeavor. Best, Michael Hansen, CEO

Pros

Cengage employs some of the most talented and dedicated -- and intelligent -- people I've ever worked with. I've worked on several different discipline teams and never encountered anyone who does not pitch in when asked -- or volunteer even before being asked. The discourse is always lively, the ideas amazing. Employees are the biggest pro. Until last year, the culture was incomparable, and the mission of the company was clear. We all respected and were proud to work for CEO Michael Hansen until an about-face in mission last year that seems aimed at readying the company for sale.

Cons

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, Cengage has spoken a great deal about employee health, both physical and mental, and offered support via counseling services, time off. However, the executive team last summer announced a period of 12-18 months of refocus and reorganization that would involve difficult layoffs. Since then, the majority of employees have been living with worry, uncertainty and anguish. Layoffs are hitting good employees hard, with another 6-10 months to come of uncertainty and fear as more employees are let go despite the company's financial situation being healthy. We used to be an education company, then an edtech company, and now we do not know what we are. Concerns for quality in our products seem to have taken a backseat to the drive to cut costs and in all likelihood, get the company looking good for a sale in the future. The mental health of employees has been treated so cavalierly with these warnings of significant impending cuts over a long stretch of time. Morale is at an all-time low and the joy of the work we do is decimated. We no longer even know what our jobs are. The executive team will oversee a sale, get their bonuses and walk away to new roles elsewhere. Those of us living on far lower salaries and no bonuses will have to put our pride of working for an education company aside and search for work elsewhere. But we are told it's all in the name of progress, of moving ahead.

Thank you for your review and for your more than 10 years of service. I appreciate the positive remarks about your talented and dedicated co-workers – I agree and have experienced the same in working with individuals across the organization. I understand that change can bring feelings of uncertainty. I strongly feel that transparency about our evolution as a company, and why we are making these changes, are important to ensuring employees feel invested in our business strategy and success. I know this transparency can sometimes contribute to those feelings of uncertainty, but I am saddened to hear you feel like the vision of what we do is no longer clear. I’m proud of the work we have done to better meet the needs of learners and educators. Together, we’ve evolved into a leading global edtech company that is now more than 70% digital, continues to gain market share from competitors and that has tenure amongst our leadership team that is envied by many competitors.
