Pros

Cengage was an amazing, positive place to work for many years. I admired our leaders, felt supported by my team, and genuinely loved coming to work every day. There was always a new challenge on the horizon, the job responsibilities varied from day-to-day, and there was great comradery among collegues. Team members cared about their work and were thoroughly invested in making improvements in educational materials.

Cons

The changing landscape in higher ed and the "book business" made it hard for a large company like CL to transform their centuries-old product development model(s). We wanted to, but lacked the organizational expertise and infrastructure to be able to move forward. The leadership team that took over circa 2013 brought a certain (welcome!) level of candor and new direction that was desperately needed. Unfortunately, the execution of that vision was lacking. We'd set off in one direction, only to find that the plan would change after a short while--before we could even see the fruits of our labor. It was clear that the executive leadership team didn't work well together (the disparity in vision was "felt" in the trenches); the communication received across leaders was "consistently inconsistent." There was also a culture of "fear," instead of collaboration, which drove unprofessional behavior and, worse: unnecessary politicking that didn't lead to superior product results.

Pros

My coworkers were the best part of coming in to work every day. The energy was great, and people felt good about their jobs and their place in the company. My immediate managers were really involved, enjoyed their work, and cared about the morale of the team.

Cons

Then the layoffs came and rattled coworkers. Seems like some execs (who were rarely at the office location) decided that in the interest of corporate restructuring and the bottom line, it would be okay to downsize. They didn't realize that they were killing the spirit of the teams that were so successful in the first place.

Pros

If you're passionate about education, it's wonderful going to work every day with similarly minded people. The work-life balance is still pretty great, even if it's gotten worse over the past few years (less flexible hours, less working from home, etc). Your coworkers are great people, many of the mid-managers genuinely care and want to help and look out for their employees.

Cons

As other people have said, the learning curve is STEEP. Plus, with all the reorgs and moves and lay-offs, we're severely understaffed and the staff we DO have is all new, unexperienced and overworked. However, the biggest problem by far is salary. Speaking as someone in a junior position in one of the most expensive cities in America, the salary is just not enough to live off of, especially considering how understaffed we are and how much our workload/responsibilities has expanded over the past two years. Once the hiring freeze is lifted, if you manage to find people who are willing to work for such a paltry sum they're most likely going to stay long enough to put it on their resumes, then leave for a company that's willing to pay them a livable wage. In the meantime, you're losing multiple people a week to similar companies who pay more, and out of the remaining people left, nearly everyone is job hunting.
