Pros

Good people to work with and learn from. There was always a chance to pick up an interesting project and learn new things. On the corporate side, the company values the safety of their employees. They take great pains to provide a safe working environment, which is necessary in a steel mill.

Cons

There seemed to be opportunity for only moderate career growth. Opportunities for extended growth seemed to only be available if you move to whatever mill that corporate required (which aren't in the most desirable places to live). Also, at my mill each employee is doing the work of about 4 people.

Pros

Jacksonville employees work hard, care about their performance and quality, and care for one another. Good teamwork still, but has declined in past few years with different structure.

Cons

Work life balance is very poor now. Shrinking head count, more work from changing schedule, lowering morale and causing people to leave.

Pros

Pay for area, successful company with global reach and opportunity. Evolve with market, innovative and structured very open to employee engagement and change. Safety is #1 top priority.

Cons

Meetings take management out of the game. Management experience is not best utilized. No management on off shifts. Works well for motivated employees, exploited by not motivated employees. Creates a push you, pull me relationship for middle management. These experiences are specific to my location. A non union culture was introduced into a union setting with mixed results. We are limited on employee head count where other facilities are not. This creates the overworking of middle management, do more with less. Poor moral and a recent turnover rate that is uncommon to the shop, which has been in business for 30+ years. Many employees have been with the company since the start and those who are management have been forced into positions unfamiliar to their skill set and well.......we know what poor evaluations lead to.....
