Pros

Free lunch via an app, great selection. Some people on the team are great, really passionate about their job.

Cons

I believe I got unlucky with the team I joined as I know people who have great things to say about the company. Lots of red tape and processes yet chaos ensues each day. Be careful about joining a data science team as an engineer - lots of code changes shipped at once to prod without testing in other environments first. No buy-in to engineering practices, even the basics. Manager with no concept of engineering practices, release plans etc, everything is about speed, with little regard for quality. Those who give estimates to do a job half decent are marked as non-performers and pipped (happened to colleagues). Ridiculous deadlines set with extremely vague requirements is the norm. Severe micro management. Awful WFH flexibility. People leaving, including somebody after 2 months of working there. More tech debt (and difficulty in making minor changes) than I've seen on any project in long career of software engineering.

Pros

Great scale, bigger impact. Anything you do touches many lives and you can help so many of them.

Cons

Everything possible is being outsourced and moved to India in the tech vertical, which of itself is not a bad thing, but when you combine that with a health industry that is highly regulated and many contracts prohibit access to PHI due to HIPAA from outside of US, things start making less sense. Put that together with an astronomical time difference that makes working together and handing things off very challenging to say the least. Many slogans about patient first mentality and high quality, but this is a for profit company that is also public, so naturally it cares A LOT about profits, that many times contradict quality.

Pros

While I worked at Optum I greatly enjoyed the people and projects that I was a part of. It was easy to feel like I was having an impact on improving the lives of the patients we served. I had a great work/life balance and it really felt like my immediate management cared about my personal wellbeing.

Cons

The biggest downside for me was how the company went about laying off myself and the entire team that I worked with. I left for vacation feeling good about my position in the company and how increased demand for our work might result in the team expanding in the near future. So I was shocked to get a call in the middle of my trip letting me know that my position was being eliminated and I would be getting laid off in 2 weeks. Needless to say that put a damper on the rest of my time off. The company's severance package did not do anything to make me feel better after the six years I had spent there either. Only 4 weeks of severance was definitely not enough to cover the amount of time it takes to apply for, interview with, accept, and then be screened for a new job. I had to dip pretty heavily into what little savings I had to continue to pay my bills after the severance ran out.
