Play.com, not what it used to be

Pros

The company employs people from diverse ethnic backgrounds which is great. Environment is friendly and you can always talk to your manager. Salary always paid on time.

Cons

No career growth in the company and no promotions, which is very disappointing. The view is very short-term, the best employees of the company leaving because they can't see their future in the business. Lots of deadwood in the Head Office on high salaries, which don't contribute to the business. Since the big redundancies in March 2013, one employee can sometime do the job of 2-3 people and it demotivates and brings less productivity to the company. Lack of strategy and incoherent decision making - internal processes can change very quickly without advanced notice, which makes employees confused and customers unsatisfied (example: API updated but no merchant was told about it in advance, only after it happened, and that caused problems for businesses). New categories are launched although the website isn't ready and needs a massive overhaul. Forcing Japanese ideas although everyone can see that it has negative effects on the company and the employees. Too much time is wasted on meetings instead of proper work.

Going downhill fast

Pros

Weekly lunch Good medical and dental benefits

Cons

Since Rakuten took over Buy.com, the company morale has gone down. The owner of Rakuten made a speech during his weekly meeting about cutting back, going lean and all that. A few weeks later, it was mentioned in the company meeting assuring us that there will be no lay-offs. A few weeks later, they laid off more people. They talk about transparency and communicating better with each other, but they are lacking that particular set of skills or they say things which means nothing. The company is seller-centric and marketing is done at a very chaotic manner. Even though the medical and dental benefits are good, the pay is way below market rate.

Pros

Good start for if you are new to the business

Cons

Terrible management has no clue what is going on. Daily huddles and weekly meetings to let others know how busy you are. Keep track of everything you do
