Save Your Mental Health and AVOID

Pros

Company happy hours, cool people/events around the office, people outside of the company think that it's a cool/great place.

Cons

R29 does not practice what it preaches. They talk so much about the importance of women advocating for themselves and taking control of their bodies and mental/physical health, but when their employees do it, we’re told that we should just be grateful for the opportunity to be working there and that there are “limited resources.” In the past, they have published articles about the importance of work-life balance and the detrimental nature of a toxic workplace, but there is zero work-life balance there and the workplace culture is more than toxic. Bosses text you at 11pm, early in the morning, every day of the week including Saturday and Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Enjoy your “day off!“ Except you still need to constantly be checking email, writing something, publishing content, posting content on social platforms etc. The holiday calendar is abysmal, and you have to jump through 10,000 hoops to get a day off. If you are coming to R29 from a company with any semblance of structure, you will be shocked at how poorly it is run. The HR department is passive aggressive and only has the best interest of the company at heart, not yours. Upper management is terrified to stand up to executives, and the culture of quiet bullying trickles down from the top and seeps into so many parts of management. Higher ups (and HR) are desperately trying to make sure that people don’t find out how bad it is. People working 60, 70, 80, 90 days consecutively not having a day to themselves? That’s wrong. Offering only 5 paid sick days to full time employees? That’s wrong, and also well below the national average. People work from 9:30 to 6:30 (usually 7:00/7:30) and eat lunch at their desks. Nobody encourages you to have a life or interests outside of work. Everyone is competitive and only wants to promote themselves, and it’s not a healthy environment. Internally, it’s not about building women up, it’s about building yourself up so you can leave the company and be in a decent position to go somewhere that values their employees and their employees’ health. Please, look at these reviews. You may think you were offered your dream job at your dream company. It is all surface level. You are better off working for a company that actually cares about its employees, and actually practices its ethics and values internally. There is a difference between "the hustle" it takes to work in media and an office that literally doesn't care that people are getting sick over the hours they're having to put in. Working in media is hard! But there are media companies that take a lot better care of the people working so hard to make them great.

DO NOT WORK HERE

Recommend
Business Outlook

Pros

NONE, WHATSOEVER. DO NOT WORK HERE.

Cons

Seriously, it is not what it appears to be from the outside. It is not worth your health and sanity lol. It is a complete and total mess. Q4 layoffs and restructures two years in a row. I would venture to guess more coming this year, if history is any indication. Zero direction. Extremely inefficient across all areas of the company. Process constantly changing, without informed research, implementation, or training. The people in charge have no idea what they are doing or how to run a business of this size. Insane turnover. "Managers" with zero management experience. Promoted just because you put your time in, not because of skill - leads to terrible and/or lack of management. Many are extremely rude/mean to each other over email. Hostile work environment. The company is totally hypocritical - touts empowering women but treats their mostly women work force with clear disrespect and disregard. EVERYONE is miserable. Everyone wants out. It is a sinking ship. The only positive is the people. Sure, I have learned a ton. I am confident I can handle whatever my next job throws at me. But was it worth years of being underpaid, overworked, lied to, lead on, manipulated, MANY tears, and the many effects of stress on one's life? NO. I would advise my best friend against working here, so I want to extend that to whoever may be considering a job at Refinery29.

Layoffs coming

Pros

Not applicable. Nothing is good here.

Cons

They will work you to your bone with no compensation. Unlimited paid time off was introduced but the company can't afford employees being out for more than a few days at a time. The entire design, marketing solutions and fashion team left and everyone is swiping that under a rug. No one cares to address it. Launched a diversity and inclusion initiative that is led by a white woman and a white man. Fail! This company is surrounded by white people. Research the executive team so you know what I'm referring to. Cherry on top is that the company is now being ran by three white rich men that know zero about women. The women that are supposed to be leading teams are just puppets. They should also consider leaving, it's not like they are making change happen. Overall, everyone knows that executives are here to get rich and grow their own image...aka be famous. They will make you think they care at fake company meetings (filled with unicorns, rainbows, flowers, glitter), when they really do not. Pretty sure the board of directors is fake, if they were real we would not be in this situation. There is no money for anything. We all live in a constant fear of losing our jobs. We have not hit our revenue goal since forever. They think that free stuff will make us forget how miserable it is to work here. There are a lot of awful people working here and it does not matter how much you complain or what they do, these people will remain here. Actually if you are mean, you will succeed here. Scream the loudest, be rude, unkind, and you will raise through the ranks in a minute. Saying employees need to live through our values is all fake news. Do not come work here. Save yourself!
