Pros

A great way to get experience in all areas of a newsroom. NY1 allows you to do more than you would at other stations, and the skills you learn are invaluable. Located in Chelsea Market which has a ton of food options. Management is friendly overall.

Cons

For what you are expected to do, the pay is terrible. It is MUCH lower than other stations in the city. You are expected to lug around 70 pounds of gear and drive throughout the five boroughs - in cars that are so old that they barely run. I've never taken lunch once at NY1. I have time for a coffee in the morning, and maybe time to grab something from a vending machine. Many of the anchors are cranky and treat lower ranked employees terrible. Several of them actually scream at news assistants and belittle them. They have an ego problem. The schedule is only posted a couple of days before you are supposed to work. Hours are not consistent - could work a 6 hour day or a 14 hour day with no notice.

Pros

Customer interaction, great benefits, excellent opportunity for advancement. Excellent training program. Was very loyal to Charter by retaining customers and selling Charter services.

Cons

Too many chiefs and not enough support for real issues with upper management. Was terminated unjustly after reporting suspected violations involving my supervisor and coworker's and filing a retaliation complaint.

Pros

Excellent benefits - health, life, 401k - it seems like a small thing, but you also get free or discounted internet, phone and cable services.. Decent vacation and sick time allowance. Good collateral budget and training. Very high income potential.

Cons

Their catch and release philosophy is for customers and employees. For customers you sign them but then pretty much are unable to help them once they are installed - billing questions etc. they have to call into CS, which apparently isn't pleasant. I don't know what the employee attrition rate is but in this position it is very high, within a year of training only there was no one but me left from class. Things are changing but the biggest frustration has been in compensation, it is totally feast or famine - and even when you are projecting a feast of a month there are a million ways someone else in the company can sideline you.
