Pros

Love my team - my manager and reports. All are talented, competent, kind, hard-working. Really interesting and challenging work, plus lots of autonomy to figure out the best ways forward. Resources are sufficient to try new things. Improved communication about the company and division strategy has me feeling optimistic about our direction and ability to execute. Flexible work location and schedule.

Cons

Sometimes it’s *too* autonomous - more direction and timely support from directors / executives would be helpful. Everyone’s calendars are packed, so finding time for a conference call with anyone at director-level and above can take weeks - which means initiatives move slower than they should. Unhealthy conflict between teams sometimes creates a negative work environment. And insufficient accountability for long-time underperforming teams sends the wrong message to other teams. There’s lots of support and motivational talk about innovation and experimentation in the first quarter or two each year - but the second half of the year there’s total focus on making the numbers through past proven methods. It’s hard to have a “culture of innovation” for only 3-6 months per year!

Pros

They have coffee machines in the kitchen

Cons

They spend a lot of time and energy trying to appear as a great employer through industry awards and spruking employee benefits but try and avail yourself of these benefits (e.g leave for sudden illness) and they will bully you to take vacation leave instead, to preserve their all-important staffing budgets. Salaries are low for editorial staff.

Disgusted with Sexual Harassment at Wiley

Pros

The CEO seems interested in change. Whether he can manage it is another matter. Many have tried and failed.

Cons

As somebody who has worked in Wiley for many years, I had (quite a while ago) heard about the sexual harassment allegations made against the MD of India, which have been repeated on Glassdoor reviews elsewhere. I was willing to reserve judgment, not knowing all the facts. But prior to this, this particular MD did have a reputation around the company for coercing his employees to rate him well on evaluations. At the time, it provided a bit of a harmless chuckle, and people just laughed at the weirdness of this sort of power-tripping. We overlooked the ethical implications, figuring his place as head of India was secure either way. But now that I see a flood of five-star reviews, specifically calling out his name with effusive praise, I can only assume he has once again coerced his direct reports to fill the platform with positive comments and push the negative ones down. The issue is not just this individual, but with the broken culture in Wiley. The leadership of the company pays lip-service to building an empowering environment for working women, but that's all it is: lip-service. The leadership knew of this problem (this is just one -- there are others in other locations) but they chose to overlook it because India is a key rung in their emerging markets strategy.

Wiley Response

We posted this on a previous review that addresses the topic you reference but it's worth re-posting here: We are aware of the article and the allegations. Please note all references to Wiley executives being booked are completely untrue. We are not aware of any actual police investigation. This apparently arises from a situation in India almost two years ago and the employee’s claims in this incident, which were taken quite seriously, went through a thorough investigation process including an industrial tribunal and review by an independent committee. The duly constituted panel found that the allegations were not supported by any credible evidence. Our HR executives managed the situation well and acted appropriately. We are currently working to address this false media report more formally with our legal counsel. We remain committed to creating an environment of respect and dignity toward each other and ensuring we all adhere to our standards for business and social conduct.
