I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Shopify (Auckland, ) in Feb 2021
Interview
I applied for the role via the website and it took approximately 1 day or so to receive an email inviting me to the next stage of process which was a “Chat Interview”. The email explained it was a casual chat about my previous successes and experiences inside and outside of work, my work experience, connect with a new person and answer any questions I may have.
The chat interview times were all midnight - early hours of the morning. I emailed to request a different time and advised of my hours of work so we could find a time that suited. I had to send a follow up email as I hadn’t heard back and I was then able to pick another time.
The interview was informal. The interviewer was very casual, friendly and didn’t seem to look like she had done a lot of interviews before. I studied reviews on here prior to the interview so I felt prepared. I was asked about my most recent role which was fine however I felt like the interviewer didn’t read over my CV well as my current role didn’t relate to the role I was applying for, however the previous roles listed (6 years of being a customer service advisor in similar roles) were more relevant. The questions were quite simple, but I didn’t feel like they were the right questions to ask for an interview.
I heard back about 2 days later that I didn’t get the role. I did give feedback regarding the interview and explained that the interviewer wanted to hear about my current role as it sounds interesting (government) rather than asking about my previous work experience relating to this role and felt like the questions didn’t get to know me as a person or know my experience I can bring and I was advised “ Our particular interview format allows for great conversation and I can understand that it can be hard to read at times”.
I have now found an amazing NZ company that I have just accepted a job with so this was a blessing in disguise and after reading the feedback on Glassdoor, I think I’m glad I didn’t get the role with Shopify or go any further with the process.

Question 1
Tell me about a time (in your current role) where you had to deal with an upset customer and what did you do?
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Shopify in Oct 2020
Interview
The background interview was very nice.
The technical interview (Gauntlet) was extremely difficult especially the chat part. The questions were pretty weird considering they were not related to the app at all and you had to dig deeper in order to find them. You also have to nail all three, Phone, Chat and Email which is very nerve-wracking. No making up for any mistakes you make.
Definitely would not recommend to anyone. The interview itself reflects on how stressful of an environment it would be and no amount of money should subject anyone to these levels of stress.

What is your story? (1st round background interview)
I've applied online. After filling out the questionnaires, the application form also asks you to take the typing test through typing.com. Once they approve your application, you will get an email from HR to setup an interview via google meet.
