Interview was by Skype and I found it totally disconcerting and borderline inappropriate that the interviewer only asked me one question- "tell me your life story", and then proceeded to fish for dates that I graduated high school etc, as though he were trying to find out how old I am without directly asking. I get that this is a young cool company but I think that at 40, I am still young and cool enough for a job like that. Wasn't asked anything relating to job experience.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Montreal, QC) in Nov 2015
Interview
The interview was a great experience, they seem to really want to know what you are like as a person. Almost no questions were asked about work or previous jobs - seems almost likes there might be a different person who goes through and screens based on skills, whereas the interviews are about personality. There was a Skype 30 minute call, then a 3 hour skills review called The Gauntlet. The entire process went by very quickly, with no delay after each stage (the 3 weeks it took was only because of scheduling). Emails and notification of next steps came usually within hours or early the next day. I received a phone call to let me know that I had gotten the job, but not before they asked what I thought of the test - I guess they want to know, based on your response, if you'd like the job as much as they like you. Overall a very pleasant experience!
The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Oct 2015
Interview
In order to be qualified for an interview; they don't want your resume. They want you to build you own website; took me a good 2 days to make a good, well thought website; working on it for about 3 hours per day. I received an email within 2 days where one of the talent acquisition specialists informed me about how my interview will be conducted and with who. My interview was with one of the recruiters and was via Skype in which I can choose when would be the most convenient time I can do an interview.
During the interview, the interviewer asked me about what I did in my life, wanted to know the chronology of what happened when and how I got there, what I did in high school ect. We then got into conversation of how shopify works in terms of the selection process and how he got to his position as a recruiter. Overall I thought the interview went great, although they do not typically care about your previous experience; it seems like they pretty much want to have a conversation with you and use their "gut-feeling " to choose their candidates for the second interview. I waited about a week for a response, afterwards I e-mailed the initial person who emailed me (not the interviewer) and I got a call back the next day informing me that I won't be proceeding to the next interview stage. When asked about feedback and reasons why I was given pretty much a vague answer; nothing specific at all. With all these points in mind, not even speaking about my experiences it seems as to maybe the interviewer perhaps had nothing in coming with me, or perhaps what I did in high school wasn't interesting enough? Who knows. All in all, they base their interview on their "gut-feeling", although I thought the interview went very well, I did not get the job.
