Toxic Culture

Pros

Depending on your role, pay is reasonable. Location near the waterfront close to the heart of the city.

Cons

When the the CEO of the company walks the floors to take an inventory of who leaves before 5pm, you know you're in for a toxic work culture. Culture is defined from the top and you'll quickly see how that toxicity has trickled down through the ranks. If you take a job here, always be prepared to make an exit because there is no telling when you'll have enough and quit or if you'll get fired because you wouldn't sacrifice your integrity to get ahead. This kind of culture will bring out the worst in some folks and you'll see good people become completely different because they are either in self-preservation mode, or see an opportunity to get ahead. Think carefully if you decide to work here because there are people put in charge that use intimidation and coercion to achieve their own goals. I have seen upper management harass their workers, speak inappropriately in many instances, and intimidate and work you to exhaustion in order to make you quit on your own. Even after informing HR from multiple sources, nothing has been done to remove or mitigate this toxicity. Although this type of environment is not unique to any company, I believe simply, that these are the values that this company currently upholds.

Worst company ever!

Pros

There are a few good people who make the environment more tolerable

Cons

I would highly discourage anyone from working at Big Fish. The biggest reason is the awful management- there is no communication, they don't listen to the needs of their team, they have superior attitudes and provide absolutely no guidance or mentorship. The executives take credit for any wins, and never show any appreciation for individual achievements. They also demand 80 hour work weeks with no reprieve. For these reasons, they have had very high turnover, hence why they are always hiring. The constant re-pivoting with all the acquisitions and team changes only further complicates the work environment.

I’m very disappointed in current leadership.

Pros

I highly doubt I would have received the opportunity I did at another company. Many of the people I’ve worked with here are amazing, intelligent, creative, show great leadership, and are a lot of fun to work with. Unfortunately, most of what made Big Fish great has dissipated under current leadership and it’s hard to imagine the good things/people will be around much longer.

Cons

Last fall, 15% of the company was laid off so the new president could restructure. Upper level executives were brought in that had all previously worked with the new president in the past, some of whom had little experience in mobile game development. In the last year, the environment in our office has become extremely toxic and fear based and no longer cares about the people in the company. Our leadership doesn’t have a strong strategy to create hit games and it extremely evident from all his actions that Jeff Karp does not care about his employees.
