Some growing pains but overall a good place

Pros

Smart, engaged colleagues that really care. I've personally learned a ton from many different people here. Pretty good work life balance. This has become a bit worse as the company has grown and things have become somewhat more stressful. But it's still really balanced. It's pretty rare to have to work on weekends. Most people probably average ~50 hour week. Real career growth opportunities. It's still got that startup vibe and there are more things that could use some attention than there are people. So, it's a great place to be if you want to have real responsibility and get the chance to take on big projects. Real, start-up level growth and scale. It's unusual, in my experience, to find a company of this relatively small size that has really large technological scale. That tends to mean interesting problems to work on. Also, it's pretty rare to see the kind of business growth they've seen over the last few years, which is an education in its own right.

Cons

Growing pains have been real. Some parts of the company have totally outgrown and out paced the policies necessary to keep things working smoothly. Pretty normal for a start-up though, and those problems aren't being ignored so I think it will improve. Executive team, especially the CEO, has a bit of a tendency to meddle in areas that they are no longer involved in day-to-day. Overall, I think the executive team still periodically acts like it's a smaller company than it now is. My sense is that this is getting better than it used to be though. Office location in NYC is in a crappy neighborhood, though the office itself is nice inside.

Pros

* We're a quickly growing but stable and responsible company. * The product has massive reach and impact. The challenges that come with that are both very interesting and great opportunities to get valuable experience not available most places. * Tons of opportunities to interact with fun coworkers (hobby clubs, IM sports, happy hours).

Cons

* Growing pains can be tough. We're a different company than we were years ago - better in most ways, but some things have not received the attention they need. We need to work together to ensure important, healthy changes continue to be made.

Going through more than just growing pains

Pros

The people are Braze are some of the best. There are really some great people there who make really great coworkers.

Cons

Braze used to be a great startup environment where everyone was heard, everyone's opinion mattered, and everyone pulled together as a team and a family toward the same goal of making a great product and a great company. Although growing pains are a normal thing for startups, Braze has had and continues to have some of the worst I've seen. Transparency, something touted by upper management, is at an all-time low as previous steps to become more transparent have been reverted with no replacements or explanations. More company and policy updates are spread via gossip and backchannels than through management. Critical feedback is not accepted by management: at best it will be ignored, at worst it can cause issues. Many managers are chosen to be managers because they are good at the job of the people they are now managing, but have very little or no experience in actually managing people. This shows very much. Direct managers do nothing more than feign interest in advancing their reports' careers, with no concrete guidance or help. There is almost no path upward in many departments, and in many cases the only way to grow your career at Braze is to jump to another department. Managers' only concern seems to be CYA and there is an astounding amount of it. Upper management has no singular vision. Most departments are very siloed and have wildly varying expectations of their employees. Each department is essentially its own small startup with its own problems, and somehow they need to work together with all the other departments to survive. It is not a recipe for success and that's certainly how it's panning out. In the meanwhile the employees across the board are underpaid and running around trying to keep sane. Just to note as well, Braze used to be called Appboy and their reviews don't carry over to the Braze name on Glassdoor. Take a look at Appboy's reviews as well for a full picture.
